Performance Upgrades for SL55

Did a search and didn't come up with much info.

I have a '04 SL55 and I'm thinking of doing some performance mods.

What can you guys recommend thats reliable and proven for HP increase? Also where should I look on the net to find these performance mods.

Also interested in lowering the car. I've done lowering links on my Cayenne Turbo with Air Suspension without problems. But will it pose a problem using lowering links on a SL55 with the hydraulic suspension?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can advise.

Actually, there are quite a few options. All the forum sponsors sell mods of one sort or another. Adam from Euroelites is particularly active and has already provided some good information for you.

In terms of manufacturers, Kleemann (http://www.kleemann.dk/site/Main/performanceproducts) and Renntech (http://www.renntechmercedes.com/R230_SL.html) are probably two of the most widely used. Evosport (http://www.evosport.com/product/Default.aspx) also makes some interesting products.

The E55 W211 AMG forum (https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg-81/) is a good place to look for information. Their cars have the same engine as ours but there's quite a few more of them and the tuning discussions tend to be more frequent and more detailed.

The most common first mod is probably a larger crankshaft pulley and ECU tune but that's not the only way to go. My own mod list is:

- VRP 80 mm throttle body (done)
- SLR cams (done)
- Evosport headers (scheduled to arrive this week)
- VRP airbox (scheduled to arrive next week)
- Nitto NT555R2 tires (ordered today)
- Quaife limited slip differential (just gave the go ahead today)
- Custom ECU tune (know I need one but haven't scheduled it yet)

The two mods that I've already had installed produced 440 RWHP on a Mustang dyno, which probably equates to about 550 crank HP. I'm hoping the other engine mods get me to about 480 RWHP / 600 crank HP and that the Nittos and Quaife will effectively transfer the additional HP into forward velocity.

So lot's of options. Have fun choosing!

Thanks guys I will look into your websites. I'll check out the E55 threads, doesn't seem like a lot of Sl55 owners do the performance mods.

There are a few of us out here. Specific guys that come to mind are IngenereAMG (has run 200+ MPH in his modded SL55), sporters78 (has the fastest SL55 1/4 mile on Dragtimes), BMS, SuperDave, scruffyone, theboogers. I'm sure there are others that I'm not recalling off the top of my head but definitely there aren't as many of us as there are E55 modders. Of course, with you joining in, there will be one more of us.

Dino, your post is timely. Look for my PM about Veloce Performance.

I don't do drags, but other than running 200+, I have outrun Porsches, Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, and more than a few Vettes.....on road courses!

05 SL 55 AMG, 01 Turbusa/8.43 @ 183..1/4 mi.
I would recommend:
Renntech:

1. Crankshaft-Pulley/Belt/Ecu mod......................AND.........at the same time, the 2ndary Intercooler and Upgraded/i.e. Larger Intercooler Pump..........

2. Headers.

3. Throttle-Body AND Carbon-Fiber Airbox................

I have done (1.) above and am working on 2 and 3.............

Total gain over stock will be around 108-110 additional HP and maybe just about the same gain in torque..........a "well-balanced" system, in my humble opinion.

Dave

Dave (or anyone),

I'm picking up my SL 55 tomorrow and have hunted for any links/information/place to buy the 2ndary Intercooler and Upgraded/i.e. Larger Intercooler Pump but can't find what I'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Add me to the list of SL55 modders--- RennTech ECU flash, larger pulley, larger throttle body and carbon fiber air box.

PM Adam at Euroelites for a quote on the Kit.

Unfortunetly my camara hit the floor a couple of days ago. Searching for a new one. Should have in a day or two. I will post pictures asap.

Generally speaking, the cooling upgrade has dropped the temp of the supercharger approx 20* It is just simply a must living here where it gets so hot in the summer.

Thank you! And congrats on the new Renntech cooling mod!!

The Renntech and Evosport cooling mods pictures are available @ www.euroelitesonline.com

Retail on the Renntech cooling mod is $3495. The kit consists of one smaller front heat exchanger and a heavy duty racing pump.

Retail on the Evosport cooling mod is $3095. The kit consists of one smaller front heat exchanger, a johnson pump, a separate external reservoir and phenolic spacer.

Right now EuroElites has a summer bonanza for performance products through June 30th. Please let me know how i can be of assistance.

doesn't the e55 have a different cooler setup as stock than the sl55? your site talks only of the e55 motor, not the different coolers for different cars. will the e55 setup fit into the sl55? more info is needed than the picture on the euroelites site please.

Boogers, sorry, our site is still undergoing updates. Here's some info for you.

The Evosport cooling mod for the E55 doesn't fit the SL55. However, Evosport has mentioned to me that the cooling mod for the SL 55 is now available. Renntech's cooling mod is compatible to all 55 K chassis.

This is Renntech's HQ press release on the Intercooler pump

Intercooler upgrade

Currently the 55 Kompressor engines and the V12 twin turbo MB cars have two cooling systems, a high temperature system for the engine and a low temperature system for the intercooler, these are separate systems only sharing expansion reservoir and over flow.

The current intercooler water pump has had some problems with durability, some individuals have tried pumps that are slightly better and have a greater flow, but these pumps are not designed to give the higher pressure that is required to work efficiently.

Our intercooler upgrade includes a heavy duty water pump developed for racing. This pump not only provides the flow but also the pressure that is necessary to circulate the coolant to cool down the intake air.

Our kit also includes an additional radiator portion for the intercooler.

With this kit we are seeing a 20 to 30 degree Celsius drop in intake air temperature.
