What is a heated Catalyst?

.............I have been playing with an engine diagnostic software and I need some help. The software has a separate category for Catalyst and another category for heated catalyst. What is the difference?

a heated catalyst is just one that has an electronically controlled heating element that is used to quickly heat the catalyst during cold starts.

.............Thanks. I have a check engine light. Diagnostic software says "heated catalyst" is bad, but there is a separate line for "catalyst" which it says is fine. Trying to figure out if the heated calyst is a separate unit or if it is part of the catalytic converter.........for which replacing the catalytic converter itself will resolve the problem

Just a guess - but there two sets of cats on the 55 - primary and secondary, right? I think one is heated and one isn't. Which is which, I can't tell you. I would guess the ones closest to the motor are heated.

The cat converters are not electronically heated, only the o2 sensors are.

............Getting confused, but thanks. I need the right answer. Look at this list of codes. What needs to be replaced when you have code p0433?

Thanks.

Ted, I couldn't find p0433 in my Audi docs, but could find p0432. I'll keep looking. You may also find info on a GM V8 forum, I believe they can have this SAE/Bosch code come up as well. My suspician is that a catalytic convertor on the passenger side is done for.
