Torque converter

Anyone have a torque converter go bad? I brought my car into the dealer and talked to a tech and after describing the kind of vibration (droning) when the cars under load he said it might be the tq converter and hes had cars with identical complaints and it turned out to be that. Its almost like if ur driving on the highway and u go off the road over those bumps. Just wanted to see if anyone had this problem.

I'm pretty sure mine is going bad, but not b/c of droning. My issues are:

- slow to engage gear on upshifts ... there seems like a long delay before the gear really kicks in, like the tranny is slipping in some way

- the tranny trips over itself badly, like it's fumbling for gears when letting off of the gas

- general sense of a slipping tranny when getting on the gas, it's like the engine is working but the power is not being transferred to the wheels

I also think that it's part of what makes my S/C engagement feel so rough which is something that has bothered me since day one.

not sure about the droning ...

also not sure what magic words to use at the dealer to convince them to really check it out thoroughly

Has he checked motor mounts too? Worth a peak.

Notoriously bad on the torque monster.

What model year is your 211.076 (e55)? Up to 9/03 production droning/humming/buzzing noises or harsh engagement during gentle acceleration (i.e.: 1200 – 2500 rpm) may be caused by glycol contamination of the ATF. Otherwise, it may be the torque converter or the transmission software EGS ECU.

Im with you on the last 2 reasons u posted. Im getting that. I also want to add that this problem started after adding the asp pulley to my car. It was happening so bad that after 2 months with the asp pulley I took it off and put my stock one back on but the problem still remains however its not as bad but still there. This is just what leads me to think that its a tranny issue. The vibration comes from close to under my seat where the tranny is.

I was thinking about the motor mounts as well. Is there any way to actually check them or is just something that you have to replace and see if it gets any better?

This happens to me some times, also when approaching a turn and car decides to up shift as i leave off the Throttle and i get a thud as it shifts.
Noticed it does it most in C mode. Tend to slow down earlier now, to make sure it does not up shift while slowing down

torque converter or motor mounts? (assuming tq conv) what did they do to confirm the problem before replacing? I definitely have the delay when turning too ... makes me hate having an auto but I really don't think it should be like this. I haven't owned an auto since my 1970 Plymouth Duster though ...

I had a tech drive the car with me.. and he noticed the delay. He told me he was AMG certified.

I would definately start there.

Any trained MB should know the problem... ask for an AMG certified tech which tend to know a bit more about the 55 issues.

Did they replace them under warranty? that torque converter will be a pretty penny to replace. You might want to consider taking the car back to stock for awhile. At least until you get a new converter.

S Class
on the early models coolant could get into the gearbox via the radiator, check gearbox oil see if creamy or burnt, if creamy will need new radiator and gearbox flush and if burnt and smells burnt then suspect torque converter

Send a PM to Shardul or check out BIP. They are both sponsors here and can get you a 3,000 rpm stall that will work.
