Service B was just done recently on the GL450, which costs around $368 but the good thing is that it's done once a year more or less.

My SA tells me that I need three new tires. I was shocked to hear this, especially knowing my truck has only 18K on it and that it doesn't get taken off-road or anything to wear the tires out more quickly than usual.

I have a pretty loaded GL450 and specifically, I have the appearance package with the 19" wheels but I ask you all, is this normal?!?!

I had the 19" wheel package as well with Continentials and I wore through mine in 14,000 miles. I was down to the wear bars when I sighed it over to Mercedes the other day. I do live in the mountains though and they tend to get worn down quicker. I had researched replacement tires before the lemon law and the cheapest I could find was through Discounttire.com. Tirerack wanted almost $325 per tire

We had our service B last month and it looks like we will get 30K out of our 19" Conti's. The only thing I do is have them rotated every 5K and check the tire pressure every week.

I have the 19 inch Continentals on mine as well. I have about 22,000 miles on mine and will replace the tires in the spring. They still have adequate tread but are getting progessively louder in terms of road noise. I get my oil changed and tires rotated every six months which is about 6,000 to 7,000 miles for me so maybe that added a little life for mine. Going Michelin this time around.

I am very surprised that they would recommend replacing THREE tires. With an AWD system and TPMS, it really makes no sense to have one nearly-finished tire mounted with three new ones.

PS: If I was replacing all four tires, I would be looking at ALL of the available tires in the correct size range. It is a bit of a myth that you need to go for an exact replacement; and it's just a windfall for the tire makers who clearly charge a ton more for these OEM tire models. I ended up buying one of the OEM tires when my wife damaged a tire; but I was tempted to buy a much less expensive, different model. If I was buying four, I would not hesitate to pick a suitable sized tire from a reputable manufacturer.

Why 3 because one of the tires was replaced 2,000 miles or so ago so they are just fine but yes I do notice an increased amount of road noise in the truck now...

At 18K this must have been your 20K service.

Technician is certain tires won't last until your 30K service, so is recommending changing them now.

Would do same thing if thought your brakes wouldn't last until the next service as well.

I have 32K on the truck and my tires are fine. I have the stock 18" Dunlops. Just goes to show that different driving conditions impact different manufacturers of tires.

Just had a service "B" done last week (about 18K miles) and the tech indicated I have about 3-4K miles left on the 19" OEM Conti Contacts. I'll be looking to replace soon. Considering the Mich Diamaris, Dunlop Sport Maxx and Pirelli Scorpion Zero from Tire Rack. Looking for input from those that have had experience with the above.

I too wanted the Michelin Diamaris but I believe they are rated 'summer' tires and doesn't carry the 'M+S' as the Contis.

I got about 18K-20k out of the Diamaris' on my GL 420 cdi with the last few 2-3K being very noisy, I switched them out a bit premeturaly and put winter tires on the 20" rims. Now I have 22" brabus with Conti's on, I like them much better.

The Conti's on our ML63 suck in snow, and we have put high speed Pirelli Snow & Ice on the 19" amg, works super.

I also have the 19" wheels and will be looking for replacements this spring. Living in the midwest, I need all season tires. It appears the Continental and Pirelli are the only choices...both poor performers from my readings. I was contemplating mounting 255/55 or 265/50 tires on the 19' wheels. At least there are more choices in these sizes. Any pros/cons going slightly smaller tires?

Cons: looks stupid (wheels look too small), speedo is off.

Can the dealer make a software correction for the difference in tire revolutions to correct the speedo?

I replaced my 19 inch Continentals at a little over 30K miles with Dunlop SportMaxx tires which my dealer ordered for me and had installed in two days. They matched Sam's Club pricing.

I have 5K miles on them now and I am happier with them than the Continentals that came on the truck. They are much quieter and I might be imagining this but I think the truck rides a little better too.

The SportMaxx is an all-weather tire so I think it might meet your needs.

Not necessary if you use the Mercedes-specified tire sizes, i.e. 18, 19, and 20 will all be same rolling diameter.

Dunlop SportMaxx is listed as a performance summer tire...per Tire Rack.

So far, the Dunlop SportMaxx tires on my GL have been great. I'm in Florida and all season tire were not needed since we pretty much just have two seasons: summer and spring. Getting a flat fixed every month on the Continentals was very annoying so I'm not sure I'd run the Continentals again on the GL.

Same story....dealer recommended, so I replaced my 19's (at 20,000 miles) with Michelin Diamaris (Costco, $285/each). Dealer wanted $350/each. After 4000 miles, the Michelin's are starting to make noise, but otherwise I'm happy with them.

I stand corrected. I really was trying to say that if you don't need an honest winter tire the Dunlops so far have worked well for me. Here is the land of bourbon and football, we don't get much snow and ice.

Just wanted to report back that 18K was the most I got out of the 19" Conti's. Maybe another 3K miles but I was noticing smalls cracks around the thread. After 2 years, I thought it was safer to just replace them sooner than later.

I was reading somewhere that these tires were rated for 60K miles?

Read wrong.

GL are equipped with Autobahn-ready tires, which means H-rated performance tires. They are NOT equipped with high mileage hockey pucks.
