8 speed DSG transmission, minimum 580 Horsepower twin-turbo direct-injection DOHC 32-Valve V-8 to out-do Audi's RS6.... completely new M5 chassis/suspension/brakes/electronics/etc...

So what do you guys think? A worthy competitor or not?

It will obviously be devastatingly fast... the current M3 coupe with DSG is hitting 60 MPH all day long in 4.2 seconds... so this car will probably have twice the torque and like over 160 more horsepower... so I guess we shouldn't be surprised if it hits 60 in mid to high 3's for sure... any guesses on the quarter mile? And don't forget the next M6 will be powered exactly the same except it will probably weigh a couple hundred pounds less than the next M5. The only way to speculate would be to ask somebody here whats the 1/4 mile times, etc.. for a modified 600 HP current M5/M6... the next M5 will most likely be just as fast as this for sure... actually maybe faster since the transmission will shift much faster than the current M5/M6 and the electronics will be much better..... interesting stuff to think about though for sure...

P.S. - There are rumours that BMW is also reserving the consideration of taking this 4.4 liter bi-turbo DI V-8 and adding 2 more cylinders just in case....that would be an easily 650 or more HP car....we'll just have to wait and see.... They might just reserve this new DI bi-turbo V-10 for the farther future just in case Benz and Audi up the game with even more powerful bi-turbo V-8's....

I think it's great! Competition just raises the bar for MB, what I don't look fwd too? Is new Crop of Gustav video's think they're bad now? just wait till they video a modded NEW M5 (labeled stock) vs Stock E55/63 it'll be even worse w/BMW chatter, god help us if they squeeze the 6.0 V12TT from NEW 7-series 760 into M6

0-60 means nothing. that is more of an indicator of gearing, traction, AND some acceleration.

more tq and hp does not necessarily mean you will have a faster time. in fact, more tq may make getting traction more difficult and the 0-60 time might go up. trap speeds in the 1/4 mile are a better indicator of how fast a car is

that aside, it is going to be a heck of a motor. should be interesting to see.

what about the talks that European companies will stop HP war? If BMW are serious, then in 2-3 years we will see Corvette,MB and others in 600+hp also.. that is crazy!

2012.... wait until the gas price hit $7 per gallon then $500 gas bill per month...... The new M5 probably will do 10MPG in city and 15 in freeway.... Good luck with that !

It will **** on the E, looks-wise, if it looks like anything like that rendering.

Hmmm well it looks nice, History always finds a way to repeat itself. In 2003 when the 211 E55 came out and showed the M5 its tail lights BMW went back to the drawing board and then 3yrs later said ha Mercedes we are mightier than you! Now in 2011/2012 they will come out with a car that will allow them to say ha! take that CTS-V and RS6 our new M5 is mightier than your 3yr old model car. I wish for once they would follow the Viper & the Corvette. The 600hp Viper was annouced so the next year Chevy came out with the ZR1. They didn't wait 3yrs. I know it's a new design and blah blah blah but I hope you get where I'm coming from

MB,GM & Audi should be planning right now to come out with a car THE SAME YEAR as the new M5 ready to shoot it out "tuner style" Bring what you created and see who's the best! Bring your magnetic, 8 speed, LSD, blow off valved, 5 passenger, canyon carving, face altering 4 door family sedan and have big John McCarthy saying to the 4 auto makers "are you ready?" "are you ready?" lets get it on!

Looks good - but then again I never had a problem with the fronts of BMW's (although that rendering looks at tad x6 ish to me). Curious to see the inside and what it looks like from behind!! Sounds like a sick engine though.

Corvette is already at 600+ with the ZR1.

I'm not blown away that the new M5 will be that great. The M3 bores me. Not that impressed with the engine -- heck the engine in my 08 C6 was more impressive -- lighter and considerably more torque.

I'll stick with the E55 and 996TT. Newer isn't always better.

But the current 3 1/2 year old E60 M5 is already quicker than the brand new RS6 above 100mph and as a canyon carver....it remains the segment leader, losing out only as a dig car to newer models from AMG (E63) and Audi (RS6)..

fwiw, i'd prefer M to stick with high revving F1 inspired engines, MB already offer the other option...just makes for less choice as a consumer unless all people care about is the badge...

I agree they should stick to brand definition. Don't forget the E55 in that matchup. M5/E63/RS6 all can get devastated from a standstill.

Lightbulb And to think...

And ofcourse Benz will have to retaliate with that rumoured all-new DI 6.3 liter bi-turbo AMG V-8....

And then BMW will counter again with an even more powerful bi-turbo V-10.. then Benz again with a 6.9 liter bi-turbo V-12... then BMW again with an all-out M-version of the all-new DI bi-turbo V-12.. etc.. etc... until someone calls a truce...

Good for us though, right?

That photo was not quite what I saw in LA last week. The new 5 series is in so-cal for emissions testing out of the ventura port. The car really looked BIG. It was fairly covered up but I think it will be a nice car. I poked my head out the window of the bmw track car I was driving that day and the driver was basically laughing at me as I tried to clamber out of the race seat to see the inside of the car in traffic.

The front did not look nearly as aggressive as that rendering but then again it was a 530i not an M5!

I'm with you on that point, but emissions standards and too much prodding from Benz has caused them to go off the deep end. Now that BMW ///M and AMG are going to be on equal ground from a torque standpoint, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Actually the S65 in the M3 is 30 lbs lighter, and revs higher, and makes more hp, and imo sounds nicer, but yeah the LS2 isn't bad. Although I'm pretty sure the new M5 will wipe the floor with even a heavily modded E55 in a straight line, and it will be laughable in the corners. Just saying...

Have to say, was getting worried that BMW was starting to give in to the the greenies, but this looks to be insane, and if it looks like that, I will sell my soul to get one. A 580 hp 8 speed DSG twin turbo V8 sedan? Sign me up!!

Lightbulb And don't forget..

Remember how the new 750Li's engine was severely underrated and actually produces more like 450 HP and 510 lb/ft of torque...

Well the M bi-turbo V-8 for the next M5/M6 might also be severly underrated even more so as to not over-encourage a counter-attack by Mercedes...

580 or so Horsepower is probably going to be more like 650 or so Horsepower and the torque will probably be atleast that also in actuality.... we'll just have to wait and see it seems....

Lets make it more interesting:

Say one of you guys picks up the next M6 with this setup (which should weigh a few hundred pounds less than the M5: 4000 lbs or less maybe?) and let Vishnu or Dinan do a Stage 2 or Stage 3 set of upgrades on it, then throw a set of ultra-light carbon wheels on it to reduce unsprung weight even more and maximize the upgrades even more.... umm yeah say hello to 800 HP M5/M6's with DSG, 4-wheel steering, etc...

Or: Just pick up the upcoming Nissan GT-R LM Edition coming out in the next couple years and have Cobb tuning do a little ECU work on it.... it will already probably come from Nissan with atleast 600 HP and weight alot less than the standard GT-R with even better brakes/suspension/even faster shifting-DSG.. then you'll have again an 800 HP GT-R that will probably wipe the floor against almost anything on the road period and just be done with it. 0 to 60 MPH for the standard GT-R is 3.2 or 3.3 seconds.. with the LM Edition 2.8 seconds should be no problem... so for a Cobb tuning LM GT-R then maybe we'll see acceleration approaching Veyron times perhaps?

E55 is already a 5-6 year old model.
The new M5 should be sick if it comes out this way. Not only amazing amounts of power but the handling to match as well, MB needs to step up it's game if it wants to compete. My E63 handles like crap compared to the M5.
New M5 is def on my list of future cars.

Good news for us car fanatics! Hopefully AMG will rethink what they said about the horespower wars being over! Hell, I hope we see some 800-900HP AMGs in a few years!

Post actually

The standard BMW 4.4 liter bi-turbo has been dynoed at 450 HP and 510 lb/ft of torque..... Vishnu has gotten the much smaller bi-turbo 3.0 liter engine from the 335i to over 425 HP... which means technically 125 HP jump for the 3.0 liter engine... so atleast 150 or more Horsepower jump over the 550i's engine power of 400 should be easy..... so 550 HP is there for the taking.... and who knows maybe when you get it dynoed it might be 600 HP..... bimmer seems to be conservative with the numbers on these new bi-turbo V-8's especially...........

Now, that 6.3 liter bi-turbo DI V-8 from AMG will definitely have to move to production to counter this.... good news for us consumers again....

Oh and also

Oh and also it says that BMW might decide to implement the KERS system for the M5/M6 which means basically that residual power built up from braking can be used for additional acceleration when you want it... it basically will recycle the power, then store it, and turn it into even more additional horsepower if you want it to (maybe at the touch of the button.... like a hyper-turbo button or something? who knows for now though...)
