Fuel Injection System Service
Got my inspection while in for service A (only $285 at MB of Greenway in Houston) and they marked as “requires immediate attention” a fuel injection system service (flush). My car has about 32k miles on it, I got it around 20k, and have only used premium fuel. The service is an additional $285…
Do they just want more money out me or is this a common service item at this mileage?
Should I take it an indi for another opinion?

I had the fuel injection service done to my 2001 C240 at 37000 miles a few months ago for $150.00 at Helms Brothers Mercedes in Queens, New York. It was recommended when I did my B service. The car was 8 years old, I do a lot of stop and go driving, so I said why not?

What nonesense. There is nothing to service. Make sure you change the fuel filter at the recommended interval. Run on Premium fuel which you do. Give it a shot of Techron concentrate in the gas now and again. This will keep injectors & inlet system clean. You can do far better things with $285.

I'm not sure if the paperwork is wrong or if this is a different service than I'm thinking of. I'm thinking it may be a fuel induction service, which is definately worth the money. Its usually a 3 part system: first they clean all the crap out of the throttle body (and it does get nasty), then they use a sprayer to spray a cleaner through the induction system to clean out the intake runners and the valves and such while the car is running, and then an additive goes into the tank to go through the fuel system. Depending on the brand, it really does what its supposed to do. I know my local dealer uses Daytona Products, but I have no experience with that brand. I do know Mighty brand stuff is junk (I doubt any good MB dealer would even think about using them). I did a BG induction service to my old car. I know the BG works, it's hard to actually look in these cars before and after because the throttle body is in the back but I've seen other cars where you can see the inside of the intake is coated with black crap is clean when the service is done.

Not necessarily, it could be the service I described or it could be exactly what is says. I know BG has a fuel injector service where you hook up an injection canister and block off the fuel lines to the tank the pull the fuel pump relay to keep it from running. Then the vehicle is actually run off the injector cleaner chemical until it runs out.
I would suggest just asking them what it is. They should be able to tell you exactly what you'll be paying for. Did they call you and try to sell this service or is it just marked on the inspection form?

Yes this is BS. If you want to keep injectors clean run on Techron fuel and use Techron concentrate occasionally
Later in life - not 32,000 - you can gain from a throttle body & MAF clean. Your OBD will warn you if this is necessary. Otherwise leave well alone. Trouble free cars are cars that are not fiddled with unnecessarily other than standard servicing. Keeping dealer & mechanic fingers out of things & the hood closed will ensure hassle free life.

Performance Products advertise Lubro Moly Jectron once a month in the gas tank. the cost $6.99 each. I'm going to give it a try for 3 months & see what happens.

Why not just use Techron. It's approved & recommended by Benz. At least you know it won't mess up metals, alloys & elastomers in the fuel system. It's been advertised as unsurpassed for years in markets that are a lot more fussy about claims than the US without being successfully challenged. If you screw up your injection system I hope you realise just how much it will cost to repair.
