Automatic Door Closer/Opener

I saw on that the newer models have an optional door opener/closer. Can this be retrofitted on our cars?

You mean Trunk Closer? Can be done. A lot of work, no bang for the buck though.

Are you sure this is an OEM option and not something aftermarket? Not even S/CL's have this option...

But I saw a guy doing it plus on a comparison site online it was presented as well. I'm looking already for the site again where I read it.

^yea soft close feature for the car doors where u push the car door in to a certain point and then it closes itself, thus avoiding ppl slamming the car door.

sounds like what you see in MIB II where Will Smith is able to remotely open and close his driver and passenger doors via remote on a W211.

I'm not sure this is factory option, if that is what your suggesting. Some play on the soft close vaccum option available on US S, SL and CL models may be able to blast open and suck shut the doors. Maybe, but, it sounds like a negligence suit waiting to happen if it malfunctions and closes on your buddy...

With the doors and the trunk all remotely opening and closing that would be quite a sight. If you throw in the specia purpose (taxi/police) intercom system you could have a lot of fun with people in a parking lot

Here it is:

http://www.truedelta.com/comparisons...on_adjustments

It's called Power Door Closer ($200).

As it relates to this comparison sheet, power door closer = power closing-assist (standard 221 feature) whereas an electrical power-assisted mechanism draws doors and trunk lid closed automatically when door and trunk lid has been latched. Steve http://www.mbenznl.nl/index.php?opti...ntact&Itemid=3 would be the one to contact for a definitive answer concerning retrofit.

That must be option code 883, Closing Aid or soft door closing option which only works on the locks, it does not operate the actual door. I have not seen this for an E-class, even W212, the list from the link was for the W221, wasn't it.

And the cost in Germany for this option is €690,20.

I saw it on TV. It was a newer CL. The boy pushed a button and the door closes. I can't really say more since that is all I saw.

The drivers in the Japanese taxis can open and close the door for passengers. The cabs in Japan have this feature years ago!

I don't think that exists in Japan alone. But the point here was if this feature would be an MB OEM option or an after market feature. I'm not aware of this feature being available as an option even for the guard S-class with heavy doors, since we clearly are not talking about the soft close feature alone, I believe this must be an after market product.

AFAIK in V8 S-class, if you close the doors, you don't have to shut them hard - you close the door softly, and as soon as the door is halfway closed, locking mechanism catches it to pull it to full-closed position.

Also same for trunk - you almost close it, and as soon as the surfaces touch - lock pulls the trunk to close.

This is different from auto trunk-closers, where there is a red button to actuate morors to close the trunk entirely. In soft touch, you have to close the trunk - just not slam it.

S-class I have seen this since 1992 at least (fat bodies). Was a very "touch-of-class" perk only available on mercedes. BMW started this on 1999+ vehicles, and the trunk close button I personally witnessed on a 1999 S55AMG first, and then on a bmw 745LI (2002 I think).
