check engine light

I have owned my 2004 CLK 500 for less than a week and put less than 500 miles on it... But when driving today the yellow "check engine" light came on. The car has 45k miles and the next schedule A maintenance is due in 9600 miles.

There were ways to check the diaganostics on other cars I have owned and I am sure there is a way to get to the car's diaganostics to determine what the check engine light is saying. I do not have a shop manual so can someone direct me on how to access this information and where I might find a key to the codes that are displayed? I would hate to think that everytime something like this happens you need to head to a dealership... that would get pretty expensive pretty quick.

Thank you for any help in determining this....

David

Did you get gas during the week? Check the obvious first before jumping to any conclusions. Could be something simple like a gas cap etc... It may reset itself after a few start ups.

Follow up

I went to the local Autozone and had them check the code... turned out to be a P0456... I checked the gas cap and had him clear the code. Now time will tell if it comes back or not. I did look into the code someone elsewhere on this site said that the slow leak may take time to come back up.

Time will tell... thanks for the responses.

If the gas cap is tight and the light comes back on again, you may want to replace the gasket o-ring in the gas cap. It's a cheap part from the dealer.

Went to the dealership today and they said this might be some kind of European setting.

I asked if they should reload the software but they said this might not help because they had to know which software to reload. ???
