I just use what's recommended everywhere and is standard, and that's Mobil 1 0w-40 European Formula.

I'm just curious to know why anyone would want to use anything other than Mobil 1 0w-40? It's a great brand oil, it's highly recommended for the engine, and there's no big reason to switch to a different weight that isn't 229.5 approved? It's not like you're saving money by going to another Mobil 1 product either.

BTW, Oreilly's is having a special, $4.99/qt of Mobil 1 through May 25.

From what I heard Mobil 1 ESP is what they are now recommending for Mercedes vehicles. I could be wrong, though.

The ESP stands for Emission System Protection.

The dealer gave me 5w-40 based on my vin number, for my C55. Book clearly states 0w-40. I don't remember if it was ESP, but the part number was Q-1-09-0162

This was covered in-depth somewhere else - and I thought that the 5w-40 was a diesel engine formula.

The 5W-40 ESP oil is for diesel engines, heres a page from the mobil site.

The MB spec 229.51 is for diesel engines and the 229.5 is the spec for gas powered. Unless you guys are converting your AMGs to diesel, you should still be using the 0-W40 European formula Mobil 1 that does meet the 229.5 spec.

exactly, 229.51 is not a "better" spec than our 229.5, it's a different oil designed for diesels.

you guys are putting the wrong oil in your car, it should be mobil 0w-40

I've had two different dealers in Phoenix put in 5w-40. They both claim that it better suits Arizona summers. But after hearing way too much mechanical piston slap and valve clatter in "cold" 45 deg mornings I insisted that they use 0w-40 the last service. Most of the noise was gone. I suspect that 5w-40 in bulk is cheaper for the dealer than bottles of 0w-40.

There is a lot of misinformation in the thread. 5W40 is fine and is made to be compatible with diesels emission standards, it is not only for diesels.

Jon - What troubles me about this document is that it is very generic and could have been produced by anyone with a computer. No MB document reference number, no source and no date of publication.

I'm not saying it isn't accurate just that there's no proof or procedure to verify.

Further it is contradicted by MB's official recommended fluids document (S-0473-08B) which states:

on page 5 -

footnote 1 - "... 229.51 is only approved for diesel engines."

footnote * - Not approved for use in AMG engines. (Where the * denotes all oils in the list except Mobil 1 Formula 0W-40 and Mobil 1 ECF 0W-40).

This document (S-0473-08B) is still the latest posted on the Startekinfo website. From the left menu, select MB workshop resources and then select Recommended fluids. It is the larger 151KB of the two docs listed.

Again I'm not trying (or interested in) starting a argument but if you have anymore support for the validity of this I would appreciate hearing it.

I don't see it being contradicted unless it specifically states that 5W40 is not to be used it's possible that the other oils listed on what you are referencing are not approved in gas engine. If you read on the back of the 5W40 bottle it states in black and white that works in gas engine. As for the validity of this document, I work at a dealer and pulled the info from a netstar bulletin dated some time back in 2006. I doubt anyone would go this far to publish misinformation.

It's your choice, there is nothing wrong with using 0W40 I choose to use the ESP because of the reasons stated on the back of the bottle. I am sure that there is a minimal difference in the two, the problem is that when everyone spreads this information around it confuses people and they go running back to the dealer screaming foul play. I have been using this oil in my vehicle since it was released and some of you may know I have a 100k mile vehicle with almost no issues besides my alarm horn is broken and my fog light .

so I was at Walmart yesterday and came across Mobil1 fully synthetic 5w-40
High Mileage formula for cars with over 75K miles.
Would this formula be alright to use? Is this MB approved?
It states the standard API, etc, approval or meets standard specs.

There used to be a Mobil1 5W40 Formula M without the ESP designation. My dealer has that in their bulk tank and mine uses oil. I bought a case of 6 online (AVL Luricants in Ohio) because I can't find it here and like to use the same exact oil for the make up quarts. As mentioned, MB says the ESP is only for the diesels but the last bottle I saw said it's O.K. for gassers and oilers plus meets the newest MB 229.51 spec.
