wheel bearing cap problem, cant put on wheel center cap
hi all, i have a 2001 clk430 and went to a shop to buy my rims and the shop was trying to put them on, the rim/lug nut fit on right perfectly. However there was one problem that they couldnt put on the center cap of the rim because the middle piece of the wheel bearing was sticking out too much and they couldnt take them off. it was in one peice, i know most mecedes can just pop out the end of the cap but i am not sure why the clk came in one peice, does anyone ran into this problem before? and how did you shorten that piece to put on the center cap? thanks

The wheel bearing is definitely not one piece. It is just a cap that is hammered on like any other wheel bearing cap. I had to take off the rims and the brakes in order to get a proper angle to the cover. I then used a flat tipped screwdriver and a hammer and then worked my way around the cap tapping on it till it started coming off. I also thought it was one piece when I did the work but it will come off. I did end up piercing one of the caps but they are really cheap at the stealership.
FYI.. I would not remove them in order to fit some rim caps. The wheel bearing cover/caps are there for a reason. They ensure that the wheel bearing grease stays in place and doesnt just dry out. I would try and modify the rim cap first before attempting to remove the wheel bearing cap completely.

Sounds like those new wheels have the wrong off-set.
Fingers crossed, centering rings, spacers and longer bolts could correct this.

it's just for the front? or the rear also? because the shop tried to put on one of the rim in the front only and they notice the problem that they couldnt do it because of it. do i really have to take off the break to do it? can i just take off the wheel only? how hard was it and how long did it took you? thank for your help by the way
