I just purchased a brand new 2008 Dodge Sprinter that has a mercedes
3.0 V-6 Turbo diesel engine.

I know it comes with Mobil One ESP 5W-40 synthetic motor oil.

I have used Vavoline synthetic motor oil for almost 17 years (5W-30) on my gas engine and have great results.

Does Valoline make a 100% synthetic motor oil: ESP 5W-40 synthetic oil???

Mobil One ESP 5W-40 is all that should be used.

The required oil is called Mobil1 ESP Formula M and is 5W-40

ESP means "emissions system protection" and refers to the fact the oil doesn't produce ash to ruin your diesel particulate filter. Mercedes instructions are to not add ANY QUANTITY of oil that doesn't meet the specs. This means not a quart of something else between changes.

This oil should be available at your Sprinter dealer, a Mercedes dealer, or possibly at Pep Boys.

This engine is by far the most technically sophisticated engine sold in any road-going vehicle in the USA and application of 17-years worth of 'mericun iron technology will get you nowhere but in trouble.

This list indicates suitablity of "Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-30" and this does NOT mean "any" Valvoline. The Mercedes approval should be printed on the bottle.

I just have a few more questions and to make sure I understand.

1. I think I will stay with Mobil1 ESP Formula M and is 5W-40. Even if I like
Valvoline oil.
I leave in the State of Iowa, US. Where in the summer it can get 100 degrees F. and in the winter 32 degrees below F.

Question: Will 5W-40 do?? It looks like from MB book it will???


2. What type of oil filter do you recommend then? What air filter?

3. What type of diesel fuel do you recommend? I prefer not to add any additivies.

4. Is there a MB web site that I could purchase of the MB approved products like oils, grease, car washing fluid????


I tend to follow the owners manuel for any truck or car I have owned so I will stay with Mobil. An opinion on Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-30? Any opinions on which oil I should use?

0W/40 and 5W/40 covers a very broad temp range. I might let it warm up a couple of minutes and drive gently at -32F but doubt you will epxirience that very often.....

Most of us DIY'er like MB or OEM filters. They were afterall designed for the vehicle.

Your engine requires ULSD (D1 or D2) or a 5% blend of Biodiesel and D1 or D2. No other fuel is appoved.

Autohaus or Fastlane are usually good for parts.

ANY oil on the approved list/in the specified viscosity, is acceptable. The factory fill has been M1 for many years.

Now I have to decide what motor oil to be used on this Diesel:

Which one: (Both approved by MB)
Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40*1 (Diesel only)
or
Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-30*1 (Diesel only)
or
Royal Purple - which I keep hearing from other people that this is a excellent Syn-oil.

Any more opinions???

And - where to purchase oil filters and air filters???

Any suggestions on Transmission oil (synthetic)???

Skip the Royal Purple, as it isn't Mercedes approved.

Only transmission fluid to Mercedes spec 236.14

You can use the M1 ESP FM 5w40 or Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 (can be had from Dodge/Jeep dealerships).

AVlube (online) carries both oils, and I've read that both oils are now available at Pep Boys for $7/qt

I can confirm that Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 was available at Pep Boys (Greater Boston) a couple of months ago at $7/litre,having stocked up with 24 litres at that time.

I occasionally hear some good BS about Amsoil but this is a real good one, LMAO !!

The fact Amsoil does not own a single refinery or even a single oil well. That means they must purchase their base oil, which they do from Mobil.

Amsoil's "facilities" revolve around their additive packages, which they add to third party base stock oil.

Perhaps instead of "hearing" you should do some "listening" so you might learn some factual information rather than what you wish to be true.

I have one simple question. Why did you not get this information from Dodge? I am sure it is available from the dealership or online. If your truck is under warranty you do not want to void it by using other oils. Synthetics oils from the major companies should be similar in price.

The V-6 is the newer engine and likely will require the "low ash" oils.
The older I-5 older engine requirements are less critical due to the lack of a DPF.

I have yet to see any proof from you that they make their own oil or so much as use any other source.

A manufacturer's warranty cannot be voided by using aftermarket items unless they can prove the damage was caused, directly or indirectly, by the use of the aftermarket items.

If you use 0w20 oil and the engine is damaged, its up to the dealer to determine that was the cause. Unless you run your mouth and tell them you're using the wrong oil.
Talking to a dealer about warranty items is like being indicted by the police, say as little as possible. Even if you're 100% innocent you can still say something that will allow them to pin you. And like the police, all they care about is closing the case as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Only models equipped with a DPF. That means the sedan, sprinter and 2011+ SUVs. 2005-2010 SUVs do not need it.

Regarding Bluetecs and oil changes, has anyone here experienced catastrophic engine failure as I and others have? If so, please provide input in my thread here, https://mbworld.org/forums/diesel-fo...tml?styleid=19 , as we're currently compiling data of those with similar occurrences. Thank you!

had a sludge isssue with esp 5w30 on the first use. switched to liqui moly 4605. not more issues.
