As you know, it is tough to find this item since it was discontinued......did not see any on ebay......I would try high volume SL dealers like Fletcher Jones in
Newport Beach and others in big city areas...

I believe the Rear Shelf bags for the SL 230 are still available through the MB Lifestyle Accessories Catalog Website. In my opinion, this is a must-have accessory for the SL 230 series.

WTF?Don't really understand your motives for posting as you did, but I do think most 230 series SL owners enjoy occasional road trips with a passenger and hence can appreciate the need for some additional elegantly-designed luggage space. The space behind the seats really cannot be used effectively for luggage or gear any other way. I do feel the item is a "must have" for such travel so I certainly make no apologies for the remark. I feel that other 230 SL Owners who have actually seen the 230 Rear Shelf Bag can fully appreciate the "must have" comment, but perhaps you are an exception.
Maybe you travel alone by choice, and maybe not, but either way it is rare not to have the need for some extra luggage space in an SL at some point in time. If that doesn't apply to you, then please just ignore my well-intended remarks. None of you non-traveling, non-luggage'carrying Loners out there need to be "concerned", (just to answer your 2nd question more specifically).
All that said, I think most SL 230 owners feel well-designed options and elegant details actually do matter, so perhaps they appreciate my earlier post more than you did.

Perhaps with the winter weather you are "stuck" driving your lovely Infinity Q-Ship while the older 05 MB and 95 Porsche gather dust in your garage. That must be very boring for you.

I ordered two of the shelf bags years ago. Before you ask, I sold one of them. I have the Reuss Audio system which has the sub-woofer in the trunk; hence losing 3 to 4 inches of trunk depth. I couldn't travel without the rear shelf bag. It is indispensible for overnight trips for one or two people. I can even get two small golf bags and light luggage for two into the car. Who wants to travel by car and not be able to drop the top? Indeed, the bag is a must.

FWIW - Took me six months and several failed tries, but I finally was able to purchase a rear shelf bag in excellent condition for full retail price. IMHO, best bet is to keep checking MB forums such as this one. Why MB stopped having them made for SL series is beyond me, like others, I find it a "must have" option for the SL series.
