FIX: Ticking Noise from Transmission Area/Center Console C32

I had a ticking noise coming from the center of my Mercedes C32 console area. (trying to use search engine keywords here) The ticking was slight and would speed up as I drove. Didn't effect car performance but was extremely irritating. Anyway my brother pulled this info from some type of online mechanic reporting system. We removed the heat shield and sure enough insulation was hitting the drive shaft.

Here's how to fix the problem

Report Date: October 8, 2004

Supersedes:

Group: 88

SUBJECT:
Model 202.022/023/024/028/029/033
Model 203.040/061/064/065/076/081/084/261/264/281/284/740/747/764
Model 210.020/025/055/065/070/072/074/082/083/265/282

Scrapping Noise from Transmission Tunnel Area

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of a
scraping noise from the area of the transmission tunnel, the insulation
above the transmission may have warped and is scraping on the propeller
shaft. To resolve, perform the below procedure.

1. Make a bracket to support the transmission tunnel insulation by
taking a strip of aluminum approximately 2 mm thick.

2. Cut the strip 40 mm wide and 220 mm long.

3. Drill a 6.5 mm diameter hole in the center (Figure 1).

Warning! Under body components may be hot, use caution.

4. Detach central heat shield above exhaust system and slide toward the
rear (Figure 2).

5. Remove nut retaining insulation (Figure 3, arrow).

6. Bend aluminum strip to conform with tunnel contour.

7. Fit aluminum strip on threaded stud and reinstall original nut.

8. Reinstall central heat shield above exhaust system.

Hope this helps anyone in the future

I had the same issue several years back. The dealer wanted $1600 to replace the insulation. They cut it back for free.

Me too?

Hello all
I wonder if this is what I am experiencing, it sounds very similar. I have owned my 03 C32 for 6 months now, it has 73k on the clock and drives well.
However this last couple of weeks I hear a wearing/catching noise that seems to come from the drive shaft area.
It only occurs when traveling, either free wheeling, accelerating or braking, and I can only hear it with radio off, windows closed, but it doesnt sound nice!
I have read loads of posts on the glycol leak issue but I feel no jerks or loss of power, or tranny problems at all through the pedal.

Does this sound about right? I would much rather tell my dealer to look for this issue directly rather than trust them to investigate! Synical? Yes.

Thanks guys
Mark

Sounds about right to me. It usually gets more "clicky" when you slow down. Open up your center console and drive down your street while listening. If you hear it coming from that area, it's probably the same issue
