fog lights on 1999 ML320?

i have a 1999 ML320. I'm trying to install fog lights but I'm not sure if the fog lights even work on the car. It looks like it's all built in and stuff but it never came with any bulbs.

anybody know if the fogs really work?

Yep...they really work...and very well I might add. The H3 bulbs fit into the headlights themselves. Already wired..pretty much plug and play...BUT you might have to visit a dealer to have them hook up a hand-held computer to energize them via the dash switch. While you're at it, see if they can also enable the green dash indicator for the fogs. Its buried down in one of the diagonstic menus. These PIAA bulbs are my favorites...emit a very bright yellow light ideal for fog.

Well worth the effort !!!!!

BTW...save yourself a LOT of aggravation and remove the entire headlight assembly instead of trying to squeeze a bulb in from the engine compartment. Pop the hood, remove the piece of trim directly below the headight and remove 3 10mm small bolts and the whole assembly is easily removed.

HINT : Do one side at a time, so you can refer to the other.

Do not touch the glass part on a halogen bulb. If you do carefully
wipe with windex on a paper towel to remove skin oils.

The fog lights are probably burnt out. Replace the h3 with any brand you like. Yellow is preferable for rain, fog, snow.

The fog lights don't need activated by the dealer. They simply turn on with the dash rocker down. The driving lights with the dash rocker up require a separate lighting fixture and activation by the dealer.

Springerfever is correct. The Up position is for the front fog lights only and the down position is for turning on both the front and rear fog lights. There is also an accessory fog light plug behind the left headlight assembly for external fog lights. The plug's power is switched on and off at the same time as the front fog lights.

The ML did not come with the fog lights installed because of some state fog light regulations. They are most likely not burnt out but simply not installed. I use my white fogs in my 98ML for running lights. I had to get my fog lights activated by the dealer in my 98ML.

Hey Thanks guys for the responses.

Today I went to the car shop and bought myself an H3 bulb. I plugged it in and I was hoping for a green light when I pressed the front fog button on my car. And again, it does not work. So according to Springerfever, should i go ahead and go to the dealership and unlock or something? Is this going to cost me?

Oh yeah, also, do I have to get it unlocked by a dealership or can I go to my own mechanic nearby?

The foglight activation itself is a seperate event. The grren light dash display is a seperate event. After installing the H3 bulb (you will need two, one for each side) you might have activation w/o the green light illuminated. Drive up to a store front window(acts like a mirror) and activate the fogs with your regular lights on LOW BEAM! Fog lights cut off when regular lights are on high beam. If the fog lights do not energize, you need the dealer to activate. Not sure if an independent shop can do this for you. The dealer will probably charge you but if you bought from the dealer, they might not.

The green light indicator is a total different choice in the drill down menu with the dealer computer. Good luck !!

There is a way to activate the fog light by jumping the relays. I found this when I was researching on the subject. Luckily I didn't need to jump my relays. My fogs worked when I installed the bulbs. But, no green light dash indicator.

This upgrade is very easly accomplished. The only difficulty is changing coding in AAM, which can only be accomplished at the dealer or a shop that has acces to DAS. First coding for AAM module needs to be changed to ROW (rest of the world), and to activate green indicator light changing coding in IC (istrument cluste) to enable fog lights does the trick. Dont forget to install light bulbs lol.

Did it on my and my friends ML's in about 20 min for both cars

I hadf external fog lights installed under the bumper. I used Hella FF100's. Work pretty good. I also had to go to the dealership to have them activated and the green light in the dash turned on.

I'll try to take pics tomorrow. I didn't install them. I had an independent shop install them. I think there is a wiring harness near the drivers side headlight they hooked them to.
