In one of the Top Gear episode they race a transit van around the ring. Their time to beat was 10.00, it came in a little over 10 min. They did pass couple motorcycle though.

Funny things:

There are FWD cars with half the power doing better times in the ring...ouch.

Also, the Porsche Cayenne ( an huge SUV ) ran the ring in the same time the E55 did...double ouch.

Also, a Chevy HHR MINIVAN thingy beat the E55 in the ring....I'm about to kill myself...lol.

There are turns on a track, therefore the E55 does not do so well with the sloppy airmatic. There are also parts where you have to hit the brakes, and with SBC that's just a nebulous experience.

I realize the airmatic is terrible, but I didn't think it would be THAT bad. A minivan beats the E55, really?

Coil-overs I'm sure, would help, although there isn't much that can be done with SBC. May have to trade this one in for a P-Car.

I am pretty sure the 8:50 was the W210 and done around 2000. I'm almost positive of that. The C55 did an 8:22 with sport auto, who is kind of a bench mark magazine from my understanding although I could be wrong. Even the camaro SS did a 8:20 so an 8:50 for the W211 doesn't add up. It's not THAT bad.

Here is the only article I've seen on the W211 and the ring. Have a little pride in these cars. Miata's on coils and slicks? No But not to bad none the less.

What’s all the panic about? I’ve conducted some extensive research and it is clear that the offending supposed 8:50 ring time for the E55 w211 emanates ultimately from just one source, Fastestlaps.com (http://www.fastestlaps.com/tracks/nordschleife.html). This site accepts entries from anyone at all. The E55 submission was submitted by an ANONYMOUS person who claimed to have got the Nurburgring time from an unmentioned edition of Sport Auto Magazine. Well, an exhaustive search of Sport Auto’s archives can find no such test. I would therefore regard ‘Fastestlaps.com’ and ‘Petrolsmell.com’ as unreliable and their E55k Nurburgring information as spurious.

What has turned up is Sport Auto’s Dec 2005 test of the E55 AMG at the short tight (2.6 km) Hockenheim circuit. There the E55 couldn’t really stretch its legs but it circulated at 1min 17.6 seconds; one second behind the e60 m5 but faster than the Aston Martin DB9 (1min 17.7- test Mar 2008), BMW 335i (1 min 17.8 - test Oct 2006), C55 (1min 18.6 – test Feb 2009), CLS 63 w211 (1min 18.5 – test Nov 2007) and SL55 AMG (1min18.4 – test Jan 2004) et al. The e60 M5 goes on to post a lap time of 8 min 13s (test Mar 06) on the longer (20.6 km) faster Nurburgring, which is bettered by the SL55 AMG by 1sec (Jan 2004). The Aston DB9, BMW 335i and C55 posted respective times of 8min16, 8min26 and 8min 22 (Mar 08, Oct 06 & Feb 09 resp.). Even the e46 M3 which posted the same time with the e55k around the tight Hockenheim posted 8m22 on the Nurburgring (Mar 2006).

Under these circumstances I do not see how the E55 with its prodigious power and torque outputs can turn in an 8min 50 sec time on the longer faster Nurburgring in the hands of a ‘ring meister. It is simply NOT POSSIBLE. Perhaps I also should mention that all these tests are conducted by Sport Auto in similar conditions, with the same man driving – Editor-in-Chief (and ‘ring expert) Horst von Saurma.

I would expect, from my analysis of Hockenheim and Nurburgring times, something in the range 8 min 12-26 secs for the E55k with the speed limiter in place. And since von Saurma observed, during the Jan 2004 test of the SL55, that the car was ‘stuttering for nearly one kilometre on the limiter’, who knows how much faster delimited...??

It was also Sport Auto who did both Hockenheim and the Nordschleife tests for the E55.

Hockenheim was 1:18 for the E55. But there's big difference between the Hockenheim and the Nordschleife. And the Nordschleife tends to be a lot more revealing. It's Sport Auto themselves who have set up that very short Hockenheim configuration (hence, the name "Hockenheim Short.")

With the W212 E63 chassis improvements, it would show on the Nordschleife. That 8:50 of the E55 may not be as "spurious" as one might think. But yeah, I agree that these times are submitted by unknown sources, other than their IP address.
