2005 Mercedes Benz C240 4cyl. service A and Service B... how to reset... why I'm not.

2005 Mercedes Benz C240 4cyl. service A and Service B... how to reset... why I'm not getting the reminder I should be getting to change the oil. We purchased our M.B. not too long ago, we now have reached the "sticker on the windshield reminder" to get an oil change. I thought the dashboard computer is supposed to tell us when we need an oil change. It has not reminded us and we are over 50 miles of what thes ticker says.....
We than read throught the "manual" as all you kind experts recommend.... and we found a way to turn the key to the on postion, blah, blah blah, and the computer told us we are due for service b in 6700 miles but nothing was mentioned on service a(which I think is an oil chage). So my questions... What is service a, what is service b? and why has the car not reminded us of the oil change which is clearly due to what the sticker says.... YES, I checked the manual, useless, did not identify what the services covered.. Thanks experts

Who put the windshield sticker there? Quick-lube oil change places will say you should change after 3000 miles whereas the manual recommends one every 13000 miles (I think). Now if your last service was done at one of those places, you may want to change the oil and filter anyways; when I got my C240 it came with a really horrible aftermarket filter that I quickly replaced (but hopefully the Mobil1 0w40 that is stated on the invoice).

If you're unsure about the provenance of the oil and filter, you may want to change it. Otherwise, oil change intervals are a hotly debated topic which I'm not going to wade into.

Do some quick searches to figure out what's in a Service A and B. They're basically oil changes with some inspections. They alternate, and Service B includes everything in a Service A, so your car thinks its 6700 miles from needing an oil change.

Get an oil change NOW, with proper oil and filter.. then reset the computer and follow it. Rule 1 should be never allow Jiffy Lube/Wal-Mart/ETC to touch your car. Find an indy mechanic familiar with Benz or do like I do - take it to a local, trusted dealer (Nissan in my case) with my own oil and filter and washer and allow them to do it for just a labor charge ($9.75 for me). Do not change the oil every 3000 miles that is a huge waste.

thanks, I bought it from a dealership, they did the oil change prior to selling it to me but not sure if they used mobil 1..... if I change the oil now, how will the computer know to remind me in 13,000 miles opposed to the 6700 miles it thinks I need the next oil change? It's interesting, If I go change the oil right now, how will the computer know I did it? Thanks guys!

If you reset the the service indicator & reset the oil type used to 229.5 you will get the correct service mile warnings. Read the thread above.

See post #13 for oil type change!

Do as glyn says. Once you reset the service indicator it'll start a new cycle and read 13000 till service.

In addition to the A and B service, there are also additional timed maintenance proceedures which should be followed, such as the brake fluid flush every 24 months.

Also, read the forum posts about the need to change fluid that M-B considers "sealed for life" with the first inspection at 143k: Automatic Transmission Fluid, Differential Fluid and Transfer Case fluid.

Searching is a good start.

You need the proper attachment, which then would connect to a socket, then your socket wrench to remove it, and your torque wrench to re-tighten to specs.

The oil filter housing is made of plastic, so be sure not to damage it while taking it off or putting it back on. The nut on top of the housing is 27mm.

I see, there is a nut on top of the plastic cup which means the nut itself is also plastic and that may warp or crack while trying to loosen. Understood. Thanks
