2006 ML500 Faulty Transmission Conductor Plate

Hello everyone,

I have a 2006 ML500 (164) and have had some issues with the transmission it seems. Here are some of the symptoms I had with the vehicle at times:

Upon acceleration from a standstill, car would rev high but accelerate very little and take a while to get to speed.
Car woul get stuck in a specific gear and even tiptronic behind steering wheel would show a different gear but it would not shift.
Upon acceleration from a standstill, car would rev but not move at all.
While driving I had shifted into neutral and it would not let me get back into drive.

After shutting the car off and restarting it the problem would go away.

I took it to get a diagnostics and tech says its the transmission conductor plate that is fautly and its a known problem, but its not a recall because its not a saftey issue! ya not a saftey issue...ya right!

anyways, I got a quote for the repair and it came to around $1500 Canadian dollars plus our beautiful taxes.

I have spoken to Mister Transmission (for U.S.A. thats a tranny specialist type shop incase it wasn't clear!) and they said they could do all the labour for about $300 including new oil, gaskets etc... but have to order the part from Dealer which is about $600 give or take

I have found the part on ebay and other online parts suppliers for around $150-200

My question is, has anyone used these other parts and are they the right ones seeing that the shop says there are no aftermarkets for this repair?

Here is a link to an expample part.

Thanks for all input!

If it's OEM, then it's not an aftermarket item, it is what the dealer would use as well

OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer

An original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, manufactures products or components that are purchased by a company and retailed under that purchasing company's brand name.[ref 1] OEM refers to the company that originally manufactured the product. When referring to automotive parts, OEM designates a replacement part made by the manufacturer of the original part.[1] In this usage, OEM means "original equipment from manufacturer".
An automobile part may carry the designation OEM if it is made by the same manufacturer and is the original part used when building and selling the product.[1] The term aftermarket is often used for non-OEM spare parts.

I had the same type issues - dealer replaced both the Conductor Plate and the Valve Body:

If you have an independent trans shop do the work make sure they use the current MB spec trans fluid.

For an issue like this I would not even consider an aftermarket part if there is one or even a independent repair shop. This in my mind is without question a dealer only fix.

I know OEM is origional part, but would you trust an ebay seller quoting this?!

Independent can get part and do the service for half the price, I will probably take the chance and see what happens. At least I know they are getting the part directly from Dealer.

Thanks GateKeeper, my only questions would be, if its not from a dealer how can it be verified as authentic mercedes part?

Even Mr. Transmission said before they bring the part in they need to remove the part and verify the part # with the supplier

The effort was much appreciated. I will keep the post updated with the results once its repaired, but first I have a leaking power steering pump to change! Gotta love Mercedes! At least this one I can get aftermarket and save a few hundred bucks. Dealer quote $1500. I can get for about $200 rebuilt, 2 hours labor is about $160 at my independent, and the resevoir and fluids another $50 = about $400, much better than $1500!

That is 100% correct and only dealer can fix this problem and not sale to anybody outside dealer. Part and installed by DEALER ONLY PERIOD. This is from my experience. I did alot of work call around many Mercedes specialist shops and they're giving dealer my VIN to verify correct part and dealers told them NO we can't sell you this part.

I have to fight with dealer (because I have my transmission power flush 2, 3 weeks before and then I had the same as your problems) and then dealer end up pay for parts (transmission service parts including in this kit) Dealer using grandfather thing I have no idear. I have to pay $600 for labor out of the door.
