Are there any precautions ( fuel wise) needed to store a diesel car over say 6 months ?

Well diesel fuel will eventually degrade regardless of the weather. I believe it will also become more viscous in the cold. I honestly don't know if it would be a good idea to drain it, because then your fuel senders are sitting there dry all winter with their rubber gaskets drying out, etc..

Wish I could be of more help, but I'm interested in hearing the correct answer too..

Given that you're several hundred miles north of Sydney I doubt that an actual *winter* would be involved.However,I've seen it written that apart from genuinely cold temperatures six months of storage wouldn't cause any real problems.

In colder climates diesel fuel must be seasonally blended."Summer" diesel gels...that is,becomes too thick to flow properly...when exposed to typical temperatures experienced in New England (and elsewhere) during the winter.So if "summer" diesel were left in the tank the car very probably wouldn't start during cold weather.So I'd say that this friend should ensure that "winter" diesel...fuel bought in a cold climate area *during* winter...is all that's in the tank ("winter" diesel can be used in warm weather).Other than that I have no special expertise but,apart from battery issues,I can't see any other potential problems.An experienced mechanic might have more to add,however.
