Auxillary fan.

The fan that cools the radiator and Condensor, it is only one in the Aut?

Fan Relay

The Suction fan behind the raditor has a control module on it that runs the fan at a variable speed. Power to the control module on the fan is supplied by relay P on the front SAM. The control module looks at the pressure in the AC system, and the temperature of the coolant to determine the speed of the fan. Many people have replaced the fan control unit, the relay, and the front sam, which were perfectly good, but the pressure sensor for the AC system was faulty.

Thanks

Thanks Moviela, I recently purchased a 2004 C240, and immediately had issues with no lights front or rear. A fuze diagram is present but no Relay assignment diagram.

This finding has been a joy, although it does not seem to state whether there is a relay assigned to the lighting system (front and/or rear).

Does anyone out there happen to know if there is a relay assigned to the lights or where I should strart? As for the headlight switch, I am only assuming it may be operational sonce the small lights on the switch itself light up when I turn the switch and pull out on it. I have also heard about a Head light Module.

Any help in the right direction will be appreciated, I have time to check all suggestions.

Thanks in advance......

The lights are operated by the SAM's - no relays!

2004 C240 No Lights

Thanks for the response Glyn, I have often utilized these forums to diagnose problems that I have but never joined. Thanks for clarifying that there is not a relay that controls the lights (front and rear). I am still a little confused on the SAMS. First, I assume there is a Front and Rear SAM? When you say the lights are controlled by the SAM's is that front and rear respectively? ALSO, the SAM itself, I assumed from reading earlier threads that the SAM was the housing which holds the fron and rear realys and fuzes? In reading the details that Moviela posted (and I printed) I do not see anything that refrence lights (except for fuzes, 50, 62, and 63 which all state Light Module). I have heard about a Headlight Module also, that I think is mounted in the front left of the car.

Sorry for being lengthy but I purchased this car recently "as is" for the wife and it looks good in my driveway but she cannot drive it in the evenings yet due to not having lights front or rear, or instrument panel.

If you have all lights out it is most likely the SAM's = Signal Acquisition & Activation Module. They operate off of the respective CANBUS so that you don't have thousands of wires running all over the car.

You have 3 fuse points in a W203. Driver's side of dash. In the front SAM & in the rear SAM. Your fuse etc. diagram s/b in the driver's side of dash fusebox.

You have one SAM in the rear engine compartment opposite side to the battery under a little water cover with twist fasteners & then under a cover with lever snap fasteners. The rear SAM is in the trunk on the LHS under a cover in the trunk lining.

Light activation is by the SAM's themselves when they receive a signal on the CANBUS. They are electronically protected - no fuses.

I hope you don't have blown SAM's as they are expensive. Lets hope they just need reprogramming or similar.

C240 No Lights

Glyn,

Thanks very much for your time on this issue.

I do have a follow-up question. How can the SAM be blown if other functionalities are operational within that SAM?

The only issues I am having are the lights.

Do you know about the Head Light Module? I am thinking that maybe the issue if it is not fuze 50 (which I have not checked yet).

Here is a picture of a Haedlight Module I pulled from the Internet:

Yes - You have ballasts/ignitors for the HID's & Bi-Xenons if fitted. The chances of them all failing at the same time are close to zero & they only effect the headlights. I can understand one light out. Do any lights work on front or rear of the car including flashers, parking lights, number plate light on rear etc?

If everything is off it is typical SAM problem either blown or corrupted by something. You would need a Star DAS to reprogram the SAM's if corrupted i.e. trip to the dealer or a rare Indy with a Star. The SAM's can blow partially.

Is the car storing any codes? You need to get hold of an OBDII scanner & check for codes & post them here. Autozone or similar can read for you if you don't want to buy a scanner.

2004 C240 No Lights

Glyn,

I borrowed a scanner and tested the vehicle. It does not have any stored codes. The SRS Light is on and it is showing 1 malfunction which is the SRS Light. I accidently tripped this when I was randomly checking fuses to see if any were blown. I have since obtained a test lamp and now check the fuses with the Test Lamp.

As for the Lights, I have both directional lights, brake lights, interior dome lights, 4 way flashers, and the bright lights "if I hold back on the Wiper Control".

I do not have front low or high beam, rear lights, or Instrument Panel back lights.

As for the Head Light Switch, when I turn and pull it, the small lights on the switch (2) illuminate but no lights in front or rear of the car, or in the instrument panel. Aree you saying that there is more than one of the Ballist installed? I was thinking there was only one of the Modules that I sent earlier, if there are more do you know where they are located? I went into a local shop on Friday, and they were not clear (not a MB shop). From the computer they pulled up one located in the front passenger side of the car, but they also saw literature stating left and right.

As for the SRS Light, I know there is not a fault with it since I caused it by pulling the fuse, do you think diconnecting the battery for some time then re-connecting it will reset?

Thanks very much.

The ballast/ignitors are mounted inside the front light units on most models. There is a repair kit available to replace ignitors without stripping the lights which means heating the glue that holds on the lens. I have the kit fitment method if you end up needing it.

There is something wrong with the SAM's. They are not able to talk back to the diagnostics over the CANBUS at present. The car should be telling you by light which ones are out and it is not. At the very least something has become corrupted through jump starting, or disconnecting a battery or similar.

I'm afraid you need to get this car onto a Star DAS & hope that reprogramming the SAM's fixes this problem. Does the car have BiX or just halogens?

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
Off the top of me knoggen I think it might be the headlight switch is unplugged or mechanically broken. The switch and mirror control is on the same connector. It is held in the dash by a single screw that goes straight up from the bottom. Pull it out and see if the connector is well seated and clean. If a new switch is needed, be sure to order by ViN, as the names of the colours make no sense. The interior of my car is beige, but in the catalog it is "pepple."

The switch does not actually control the lamps. Field Effect Transistors in the SAM do that. The switch uses the CANbus to alert the processor in the SAM that illumination is requested. The SAM also monitors the current flowing to each lamp, and will send a "lamp out" message if the circuit is open, and will turn off the FET if the current is out of the correct range for the lamp in question.

Hopefully it is the switch or the connector. The SAM is about $1000. whilst the switch is $100.

2004 C240 No Lights

Thanks Guys,

I am hoping it is the switch or something not too expensive. I will look at the switch tomorrow. "I am told" the lights worked prior to my purchase of the vehicle. I saw pictures with the Instrument Panel Illuminated.

Movie - good point! It is certainly worth a try & easy. An extra brain on the matter always helps! The switch connector could be dislodged.

BTW - regarding your colour - it's "pebble beige" in ROW as opposed to "savanna beige" & "sahara beige" etc. The US changes the names of some colours at random e.g. Capri Blue (US) = Tanzanite Blue in ROW - even Canada. I think your colour upholstery was called "almond" or similar in the US. The EPC sticks to the international nomenclature apart from badging in recent times.

2004 C240 No Lights

I think the switch may be the issue as well, but not 100% certain. I pulled the switch out of its housing on the dash. Prior to disconnecting the switch I noticed below the swirches behavior:

a. There are 3 possible position selections to the right of the "0"
position which is at the top of the switch.
b. When I turn the switch to the right in any of the 3 selections no lights
illuminate on the sitch to indicate that that function is working (Auto,
Park Lights, Head lights).
C. Conversley, when I do the same on my S500 the internal switch lights
illuminate in all 3 positions.
d. The only time the 2 small lights on the switch illuminate is when I pull
the switch out in the 2 positions which I think are for (Bright, and Fog
Lights).
e. Given that I am not 100% sure, I will search out someone (a friend I
hope that has the same type switch in thier car and ask to plug mine
up to see if it works or not in their car.
f. Please advise if that is a bad idea, or another way to check my switch
functionality before buying a new one. I think these switches are in
excess of $400 dollars US.

Thanks Moviela and Glyn and all others for assisting me, I am not home free yet but feel better about this.

The C240 switch only lights the position markings in the two fog light positions. The 240 did not light a lot of dash functions such as the HVAC vent rollers. Only the C320 did. So this is not a measure of an operating switch I'm afraid. Sorry to be the bringer of bad news but I've just sold my C240 after 8 years of faultless service.
