Buy the factory tool dipstick if you want to check the level manually. Unfortunately, it's not designed to actually remain in the engine like a traditional dipstick, but it works really well when used. I'm pretty sure a search here would probably yield the MB part number for it since I know this has been discussed before.

No, the factory tool is not designed to be left in the engine while it's running. It is calibrated in milliliters, and you compare the reading on the dipstick to the chart that's published in the WIS. Based on the reading, you know how much oil to add or delete. It's very precise, and it's a good thing not to overfill this engine.

I wouldn't trust that a dipstick designed for use in another engine is calibrated correctly for the M113K engine. The only way I would trust it is to take measurements using my factory tool, set the oil fill level to perfect specification, and then check the reading on the ML430 dipstick. You could then mark that dipstick for the exact fill level required for the M113K engine.

Is the one you ordered designed to be left in the engine?

In the interest of science, I'll spend $15 at my online parts supplier and buy the dipstick you mention, compare its readings to those of the factory tool, and report my findings. I'm old school and trust what I can see rather than relying on an electronic sensor which has been known to fail on occasion.

i just got a message on my dash "reduce oil level or something" i've had my oil changed about 2500 miles ago was measured twice with that measuring dip stick and was perfect so am thinking my sensor is failing... if so is this the one?

I just ordered the factory dipstick 120 589 07 21 00

It does not seem to go all the way into the dip stick tube and appears to bottom out.

Is this typical? If so, how do you know it is in far enough? I have about 7 inches poked out of the top.

that is typical. All the MB tools (trans etc) do that...

Just jam it in there until it bottoms then take the reading....

Older thread, but interesting. I would much rather have one to check.

This whole thread is a bit uncertain.

has anyone does this? It looks like just the stick is for sale on Amazon, do you have to buy the tube also?

Anyone have confirmation? Pics? Comparisons to OEM tool?

Searching a bit more shows that the bright red cap in the middle top of the motor is the oil dipstick tube. It just needs a dipstick?
