Spare tire option for GL 350

Need some help and advice
Planning to go on a long trip through remote areas of ND, MT, WY and maybe Alberta. Planning to visit some National Parks. Don't think will have access to any decent tire repair or replacing options.(has tire inflation device) 4 Adults + 2 Kids, not much space left inside. Has anyone tried this option? Wonder what the load limit for roof top is?

Thanks

May want to consider a hitch spare tire if you have a hitch.

I always thought a GL would look pretty cool with a hitch mounted spare tire and a G Wagen spare tire cover:

On my ML and R the roof weight capacity as listed on the driver's door jam states 220lbs. I'd imagine the GL is the same.

I been in Italy not too long ago and I swear I seen a GL and ML with a rear tailgate mounted spares. I looked all over to see if I can get one or at least a pic of how it looks so maybe somebody could direct me to where is something like that avalible. The ones I seen looked like they supposed to be there so I assume OEM or really good custom job.

The biggest mistake I made was not ordering trailer hitch. That would cost me around $1800 (labour incl) to start with. Two options I am thinking are
1. Getting Yakima load warrior basket on roof with spare wheel mount that in future can mount other accessories like bicycles(?looks ugly)
2. Buying roof top cargo box, moving spare tire inside ang luggage outside into box.
- Can a spare fit into roof top box?
- Thule & Yakima come in 16, 18 and 21 sizes. Wonder what would be good size, not too huge or too small to be useless.
Will greatly appreciate more opinions from members. Thanks.

Only an option on Euro W164s- not available on the X164 anywhere.

The downside of that is that it's not compatible with rear view camera or power tail gate.

In regards to fitting a spare in the luggage carrier are you thinking about doing fullsize or a temporary one? I've got a Packasport System 90 (34in Wide) and if I did put a tire in it (assuming it'd fit) it would really take up a lot of space to the point that there isn't much room in there to put luggage. Depending on how many people are in the car, I'd just let the tire take up 1 third row seat space. Obviously with 7 people this isn't an option. If all your luggage can fit in the car and with people comfortably, I'd put the tire on the roof.
