Checking Transmission Fluid Level with Tool

I got the Mercedes special tool (dipstick) for my 2002 E320 transmission check.
Do I put it into the filler tube access as far as it will go? If I try that, a lot sticks out. Is there a special length that is supposed to be inserted? Somewhere I saw a post that indicated that only 24" from the plastic tip should be inserted. Any info is appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, shove it all the way down, and over a foot should stick out still. It's meant to be used as a tool that you use when you need it, not a permanent dip stick (like a normal car would have). You can then read it from the bottom black plastic part.

Also, if you've never changed the trans fluid before, this would be a good time. Even if it's full, it's dirty.

Where can you purchase this tool? Advanced auto doesn't carry it.. Any local parts house or maybe harbor freight tools?

my dip stick tool displays milimeters on the end, as does my e class oil stick, is there a chart that shows how many mm are full with fluid hot on different models

I think your dipstick was made to check engine oil and not the transmission fluid level on the 722.6 gearbox. The transmission dipstick has measurements for 25C and 80C which equates to cold and hot (operating Temp).

Go look on Ebay for a MB Transmission dipstick for the 722.6 gearbox.

The problem with the Topsider (or drain bolt) is that it will only get the 2-3 liters ithe pan. The remaining 6-7 are in the torque converter and oil cooler. If you don't want to do the specified procedure, you could do the 3 liter drain and refill process 3 times, running the tranny to thoroughly mix fluid between each step, and you will be at about 75%clean fluid.
You will still want to drop the pan before the final refill in order to change the filter.

The engine oil dipstick has hash marks which are about 1mm apart and each one represents approx. 0.1 liters of oil. IIRC the factory transmission oil dipstick tool only has 'bands' at 20C (cold) and 80C (hot). If you got one off of eBay be sure to measure to plastic tip before using it for your transmission. They're are a number of images of the tip posted. Try Google or go to benzworld W210 DIY.
