Factors that enable the ECO start-stop feature?

Hey,

So I have a 2013 C300 with the ECO start-stop feature. I'm trying to figure out what parameters are used in actually enabling this feature. It seems to be really finicky in enabling itself, and some odd things lead to it turning on.
Some parameters I would guess would lead to the feature being enabled:
  • Engine Temp
  • Cabin Temp + Climate Control Usage
  • Driving Style, hard acceleration, etc.
I've observed that hard acceleration definitely turns the feature off. But on the other hand, driving very slowly in Economy mode will not turn the feature on until I have reached a certain RPM for whatever reason. Driving in Sport I see the feature off more than on, but that may be due to my driving style.
Anyone have ideas what may turn the feature on/off? I'd like to get more use out of it, because I find myself sitting at stop lights with the feature off, wishing I could force it on.

Turning the steering wheel halfway left or right turns it off.

Among the requirements for ECO to function:

Climate control should be set to auto
Engine is warmed up
Vehicle interior set temp is reached
Battery is charged
Windshield is not fogged up
Hood is closed
Driver's seat belt is fastened
Foot is on brake or car is in park
Steering wheel is not being turned

I get a kick out of mine but I turn it off in stop and go traffic. The eco starts the car very fast, faster then when I first start the car. Also, the MB system worked better than the *** (Automatic Start Stop) system in the BMW I tested. I noticed the BMW salesman turned it off as soon as I started the BMW I had to turn it on.

But I wonder does it use the car's engine compartment battery or is there another battery? Like what is that box in the trunk beside the spare tire?
