Seat gear teeth broken need help replacing!

Hi all,

I have a 1997 S500 and the drivers side seat back gear that is driven by the motor has two broken teeth on it! I am lost as to how to get it out to replace it, it seems to be part of the seat back pivot and has a strange square drive head on it and secondly does the dealer even sell these gears or anyone know where to find one! The seat is a disaster not only does the motor spin and grind when it gets to the broken teeth, but the seat back is now lopsided because both sides of the seat back do not move together. Help, I can't even figure out how to get the gear out!

Thanks so much, I am desperate on this one! I'm also in Los Angeles if anyone knows of a MBZ salvage yard around here.

Thanks Boss-

I was actually having a problem with the driven gear that controls the seat back. It is located in the seat back, rather than in the base. I found the solution, the gear cannot be replaced on the seat (there are two of them), one has to buy a new back frame for $500 from MBZ, shipped in 2 months from Germany. I bought a used seat in perfect condition for $100 and just switched the frames out. The problem is the drive gear on the motor is metal and the driven gear is a plastic gear that probably fatigues over time...1 missing tooth is enough to kill the backrest and list the seat until it kills your back.

Thanks-

J

Thanks for this thread, jman.

I have the same problem now.

Can you please post a more detailed repair procedure?
