Oil all over drivers side of motor... fml

Up until today the motor has always been spotless. Not a hint of oil anywhere.. I just took the car out for a spirited drive and within a mile from the house I noticed smoke coming hardcore out of the exhaust. No lose of power, hesitation or anything funky.

I pulled over as soon as I noticed and checked the oil level. The car said add a quart to get to full. I had it filled to 7.5 and its now at 6.7.

Normally I'd assume a valve cover leak, but thats typically something that goes bad over time. I've never seen it spray everywhere like the pictures below and smoke out of the exhaust?

Ideas?

I cleaned it up and out the factory airbox on.. The smoke out the exhaust came from sucking up the oil via intake. Drove 2 miles grandma style and no oil spill. I hit boost for 1500 rpms and there's oil everywhere again.

My best guess right now looks like the filler tube or valve cover. The oil filter housing is solid from what I can see

I felt like it's the valve cover also. I can move the whole thing and I feel that it shouldn't be able to move at all. After the cleanup though it didn't look like it was coming out from there so I was confused.

Back in my college days, my modded talon tsi would blow the dipstick out and coat the engine with oil under heavy boost. The worn piston rings were no longer able to manage the pressure of high boost.......

If you can move the valve cover, then your valve cover bolts are loose! I suppose it's possible for some bolts to loosen over time? I recently replaced my valve cover gaskets and like 2 bolts seemed pretty loose. Adding to that, if your valve cover gaskets are shot, then no amount of tightening the valve cover bolts will help because although the rubber gasket is sandwiched between the cover and head, the actual cover mounts directly to the head's surface.

There's no oil pressure under the valve cover, but there are definitely oil sloshing around when the motor is running with oil squirters, and such.

one car at a time
By any chance did you cap off the breather lines ? It sounds like you are building up excessive pressure, which should vent from the 3 valve cover vents (unless some butthead plugged them up...)....Ideally the lines will vent to a oil separator and then back to the intake (vacuum)....

The valve cover comes in 1 piece with the filler neck and new gaskets. Parts at Benz wants $400 negotiable so probably can get it for less than that. They said you can't get just filler neck and gaskets. I want to get this but I still havn't actually seem it come out. I'm going to do some more checking today and see if I can actually see the oil come out from where its leaking before I order this part.

Will do! I'm going to tie a rag around the filler neck and take the car around the block and I'll accelerate enough to have some oil come out. The car Can be driven and there is no sign of leaks when the car is running. It's hard acceleration that gets it to come out. If that rag gets soaked and everything else looks dry I will order this piece and hope to call it a day!

I did a little ghetto test. I tied 1 rag around the oil filter and 1 rag around the oil filler. It ended up shooting out through the oil filter!!' Check your oil filter bro. The rag was drenched in oil. A gasket must've went bad on the oil filter. I also found a EVAP house disconnected which triggered a cel a few weeks ago. It happened to be the same one but on the other side.

I can't believe it. Almost too good to be true. Try doing the same thing bro I'm almost certain the same thing will happen for you!

Haven't had a chance to test compression to check for damage from the lack of oil pressure. I believe I found the source though. If you look by the oil filter directly in front you'll see two feed lines; I think the bottom oil line is leaking. Tonight I'm going to wrap everything individually and test to be 100%.

I'll post up compression numbers and my findings tonight.

To answer the posts above. Only modification to the car are intakes, cuts outs, split cooling, and h/e. Nothing capped off or modified. I don't see where the vents are on the valve cover; all the oil is in the front if that helps. I'm feeling much more optimistic today, probably won't cry myself to sleep again.

It's your oil filter housing. The rubber gasket get pinch and under pressure the oil would spit out.

Soo... This is going to be the most ridiculous post I ever write.. Ignore the grammar, on a cell.

We wrapped each item one by one with a towel and zip tie. Then we went for a drive and figured out it was the lower oil feed line. We wanted to confirm that was it by doing a burn out with the hood up and everything wrapped except the leaking hose. So as soon as I hit the gas oil came out of the hose and the motor literally lifted 5-6". I knew I needed motor mounts but I didn't know it was torn in half.

After finding the issue we tested compression on the two problematic cylinders 1 & 8. Cylinder one tested 163. Cylinder 8 164. Both tested 3x each. Spark plugs all looked great for 90k.

I'll be changing the plugs out soon and will test all the cylinders.

Conclusion... Broken motor mount stretched the feed line which caused a leak.

Now time to celebrate!
