AMG GTS
Anyone else feel miffed the new E63 has 603HP?

I just read the article in Automobile magazine and was feeling a bit perturbed that AMG decided to make performance upgrades to the E63 4.0TT and not pass the benefits along to the GTS. I know they're always looking to make performance upgrades across the line, but it would have been easy for them to make these changes for the '17 or '18 GTS. Yes, yes I know the GTR and the GTX,Y, Z ....are coming, but why should we have to pay double the price of the GTS for that extra 100HP?

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ecu tune; edok tcu tune; BB intakes; dyno tuned
The gts is underrated from the factory and outperforms this e63S

and you don't HAVE to do anything ... exercise your right to buy something else

AMG GTS
I admit it. Poor choice of words...I'm well aware that I don't have to purchase anything. The point being that AMG knew they put a "less than optimized' version of the 4.0 TT in the GTS, so that they could come out in the future with a "newer, more powerful version" with very little investment to do it. It's not unique to AMG and MB, all the car companies do it.

So is (underrated that is) the E63...or so people claim. Brut power is just that... the GT.x and the E"63"s are different animals.
One handles like slot-car, the other one is commuter.

G63 & 991.2 GT3 & AMG GT
This is the very essence of AMG

I think its great that they select a big fat E-class as their highest performing model (bhp output terms), particularly when they launch the GTR in the same year.

Porsche guy who drives SL63 w/ perf pkg AND perf suspension
easy to beat almost any stock hp ratings, with basic tuning products. any m178 engine
can get 601hp/605t with renntech ecu and over 700hp with additional parts. probibly cheaper ($3500) than buying up models from MB.
could be MB just upped their tune to up their ratings

So far AMG hasn't divulged in the press releases what tuning changes were made to extract more power out of the M177/178 as configured in the E63s. As PeterU said the GTS is under rated but AMG is following what Porsche has done for years. We know there were a lot of cooling changes made for the GTR along with different turbos but did the E63s get the benefit of the GTR's upgrade or was it something else!

I suppose a number is more important to some for bragging rights. Unless you straight line it the GTS capability is really astonishing on the track and yet you can drive it to the club for dinner without wearing a kidney belt. Ok, I'd take more power but can I use it. Probably not and AMG knows this that's why they made so many changes for the GTS.

On another topic, I've heard through a reliable race source that the M178 can pull 800rwhp without much tuning BUT the duel clutch transmission can't handle the torque at those levels. Tuners are now licking their chops.

2017 AMG GT
I just traded in my 2016 e63s, last body style. It had under 600 hp but was probably underrated by MB. Magazines had tested it at 3.4 seconds 0-60 so its a very fast car.

These are 2 different animals, e63 and GT. Driving a car like an e63s or a Porsche Panamera Turbo, yes they are fast, but you are fully aware of the weight. These cars require planning way ahead. That much power and that much weight creates a lot of momentum. Yes these cars have amazing brakes but they are just not the same driving experience as true dedicated sports car.

They are awesome machines and if I could only have 1 car to fill every purpose, an e63 is my car of choice.

Plus these cars have to keep pace with M5 horsepower numbers as well.

2021 Porsche TTS
2 different cars and nothing to be upset about as the extra weight counters the extra hp.
As others have said, a simple tune will get you the same power.
The E will have the AWD advantage from a dig but that's about it.
One is a high hp sedan and the other is a true head turner sports car. Nothing wrong with either.
I believe the E has twin scroll turbo chargers that are also bigger than the GT(S).
