MP3 DVDs

I just bought a new '07 SL550. Having had no luck in finding a good iPod connector, I decided to burn an MP3 DVD. I figured 4.7GB of MP3 will last a while and the Command unit is supposed to support MP3 DVDs with up to 255 folders with 255 files (songs) per folder. I burned the disc but the player does not see any files in the last half of the folders. I burned another disc with the files moved around and still the last half of the folders can not be read. It shows the folder names but shows no content. Has anyone else had issues with this?

That is because you have too many folders. WHere did you hear that you can have 255 folders? on my 04, the magic number is 70. that includes subfolders. and a total of 999 files.

This will make a full dvd 4.+gb depending on your Mp3 sizes.

I posted a thread earlier describing how the comand load the dvd's. it's not like your home computer so be aware of this. but here is the basics.

Comand loads the Dvd form the root directory in alphabetical order starting with the first folder, then it's subfolders. then it moves to the next folder and then its subfolders and so on ..
after it has counted 70 total, everything else gets indexed, but not loaded therefore ignored.

The newer comands May or May not hold more files I'm not sure but i do know that 255 is too many for my unit.

Did you include sub-folders in your count?

If you arranged your DVD like I-tunes does with the Artist as the main folder ant the albums as the subfolders, then you have to take into account the subfolders because that's the way comand will count.

I had to remove all of the Album folders ans place the songs under the Artist name to economize folder space. this allowed me to have most of my favorites on a single Dvd. For artists that I had less than for songs on, I created a folder called Singles and put those songs with the Artists name before the song title.

Hope this helps.

In the 2005 E-class COMAND manual, it states that you can have a max 255 folders and max 255 tracks per folder.

Thanks my06clk. The manual does state 255 folders and 255 files per folder, but it sounds like the Command unit in my car is operating as you describe. I'm due to take in the car for it's 1000-3000 mile service soon so I will discuss with the dealer. I wonder if some of the new cars are getting the old Command units so do not support the files as listed in the manual? I'll re-arrange my collection and see if I can see more files. However, I may have more than 1000 songs total, I'll have to check.

Is this using CD media or DVD media? Which to use on an '07 E?

Good luck finding someone at the dealer who even knows.. THey alway say "check the manual".. THis is why I decided to find out for myself exactly how the thing works.. BTW the manual is wrong. the only way you can have 255 folders is to have 3 songs in each folder. ( less than 1000 total ).

The total of files in folders AND folders can not be more than 999.

I had to rearrange my collection also. I have a pretty good mix right now, so I'm happy and it's about 930 songs in 68 folders = 998 @ 4.3 GB.
I drove from Austin to Atlanta and back on CD-Mix and never got tired of my DVD.. So I'm cool with that.

BTW.

2007 E class has CD-MP3 Not DVD. except for the Nav unit.
The Manual says the same crap 255/255. but MP3's will only hold 99 by spec.

You can't rely on the Audio portion of the Manuals for these cars because they are very misleading.

I just love the many times it talk about controlling a DVD movie, then there is this little note that say's "to prevent driver distractions the screen has been blanked out"
Why waste paper telling me how to control a movie that I can't even see..weird.

You were right. I bought a used 2007 SL550 and could not get an MP3 dvd working. Once I cut down the folders to 70, it worked great. Thanks
