Sloppy Steering W202, Trailing Arm

Hi I have a w202 2.5 ltr Oliburner ..... the steering box had play in it when I got it , after placing 225/40/18 on her . It has become worse . . . .

My question is if I have taken out all the adjustment on the lock nut adjuster on the top of the box & it's still wandering over white lines etc......

is there anything else I could look at before I go and source a steering box . . . . . . .

You checked your steering dampner/shock to make sure it is not worn out, right? These things don't last long at all. I am on my third one already. It may not help your problem but you should check it while you are down there. Cheap and easy to fix.

Hi D.O.,

Tell me - did you ever find the answer to this issue? I realize this is an old thread - but my new (to me) 2000 C230 (with 22,000 original miles) has this problem as well. Sloppy steering is especially a problem on the highway - poor path control - constant steering corrections required to keep it in line. Tires checked, balanced, rotated - 3 alignments later (all showing spot on on the print outs) and still the problem persists.

I can't imagine what it could be given the extremely low mileage on this car - and it was always garaged.

These are my thoughts so far as possible solutions:

If this is recirculating ball system - then adjust the steering box (if such an adjustment is even possible)

or...

Steering damper bushings or the damper itself needs replacing

Any other thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark
