(I don't mean this to sound condescending, so please don't take it that way - just trying to help!)
Are you CERTAIN its not going into 4th? My car runs around 3200rpm on the highway (70mph) and 2800rpm or so at ~60mph. It REALLY needs a 5th gear lol.
However, I thought the 202s shifted () to the 5 speed auto for MY1997? What gears are on your shifter? D-3-2 or D-4-3-2? My above thoughts apply to the 4-speed (D-3-2), like my 96 C220 has...

^ I concur... I'm also not trying to be funny or condescending, but have you counted the shifts and you start ON 1, right? Not starting from 0, then 1 at the first "shift", 2 at the second, etc. Since its an auto, your 1st "shift" should actually be counted as "2", and so on. That would put you in the right gears with no mechanical issues, including the 4th as long as your counting the right way and do in fact have the 4th gear on your car. If your counting correctly, have you tried manually shifting each gear to see what happens when you go from 3-4, or 3-drive or what's your car has. If you physically shift into a gear, it should be blatantly obvious if a gear is actually gone or missing. It shouldn't move, and since it's not being used as full auto because your shifting it, it would free spin and not go into the lower or higher gear that does work. I hope your understanding what I'm trying to say. Anyway, just some food for thought, I did a similar thing the 1st day with my car waiting for an Overdrive, as mentioned above, my 96 would greatly benefit from an extra gear.
