about to change alternator

Hello all, I am about to replace my alternator on my 97 C180 and with some of the threads I Have read I am a little scared to start. I have been told not to disconnect the battery and I have been told to disconnect the battery. If I have to disconnect then what is the proper way of doing so. I have heard people say that their way mentioned is the proper way. - first or + first? I have a Valero alt. In the car now.

1997 c280 sport
Oops, I just noticed my error. My car is not a C180, but a 1997 C280 sport. I have started the removal, and have found that med. To large hands can make for a tight fit. I tried to remove the fan shroud to give more room but could not do so with out the shroud grabbing a blade or two and denting the radiator veins, so I put it back on, and am going to try it with it on. Also I am having trouble with the tension pulley allowing slack so I can remove the belt. Any and all input is appreciated and much needed. I have replaced many alts. on domestics and on older Volkswagens air cooled and water cooled. Please help
