This morning i drove to work just fine in my 1997 W202 C36 AMG. Now coming home is where the problem lays. It didnt want to shift out of first (2nd?) gear and the check engine light didnt come on once. Once getting home and parking, the transmission made a thud sound in reverse drive and a quieter one in park.

In the past week or two I have noticed it didnt want to shift every now and then, but nothing a light engine rev didnt fix. Also the check engine light would come on for maaaaybe 2 minutes max and turn right back off while the car was driving just fine at all speeds....


Any ideas what i should have the shop do? Obviously I dont want them chasing some goose around my engine and transmission bays running up my bill.

One thing you can do is confirm that the fluid level is where it should be when the engine temp is over 80C! The second thing you can do is when the engine is above 80C can you drive the car as if it was a manual---start in D and then manually shift through the gears??
