is engine braking downshifting? if yes, i do this often as well. my rims do not get as much brake dust when i downshift to slow down and stop. i do not think that engine braking is bad as the computer will not allow you to downshift to a point that would damage components of the car.

btw, are you posting this in the wrong forum?

i did a little google search and it seems as long as we don't exceed the rev limiter, we are fine. my car is an auto, so i have the computer deciding whether or not i could engine brake by limiting my ability to downshift if the rev is going to be in the red.

downside: waste more gas, but oh well.

I have a 6spd, and I use engine brake on a down-hill all the time.

Also, for some reason I found on a automatic transmission vehicle, it uses more gas during engine brake compare to a manual transmissin vehicle?

Yeah, it's my understanding too that more fuel can be consumed, but it's alot cheaper than replacing the brakes too often. Making sure not to over tach is all I watch. if the grade is steep enough I reach 3000 rpm, I shift up. the computer, however, will let you redline, and thats not good.

Don't forget the increased wear on the clutches (both automatic and manual trans) and the engine itself. Miles are not as important in determining engine wear as are engine revolutions and load.

Personally, I engine brake often but usually sell my cars long before any problems from this action might show up.
