Front Wheel Bearings... How to Not Install Them
Happy Sunday Everyone!
I went to get control arms thrown in my C230 Sport the other day. And the mechanic told me he wouldn't give me a wheel alignment until I fixed my front passenger wheel bearing.
Turns out the bearing is toast, which would explain a cyclical booming/groaning sound occaisionally heard in the cabin.
I had replaced the entire hub about 10k or less miles ago myself, and must have not installed the bearings correctly. This was my first time doing roller taper bearings, so no suprise there...
Does anyone have a writeup on the correct procedure? No searches found anything, nor did scrolling through the forum list for 20 mins...
I did torque the inner bearing down until the wheel was hard to spin, then backed it off until there was very little play when I did it the first time. Now when the wheel is spun, it is very loose for about 180 degrees when I spin the wheel, but then is tight for the next 180 degrees. That bearing is fully shot!
