Light Sensor message questions

My 04 C240 has the common "light Sensor-Drive to Workshop" message. After a bunch of reading here I replaced the battery hoping it would help. But alas, no luck. Without loading the parts cannon, is there a good definitive way to check the sensor is functioning properly? My guess is either the sensor itself, or possibly the voltage regulator. The regulator gets mentioned a bunch in what I have read. I have the Valeo alternator if that helps any.

Any input appreciated!

Most likely the voltage regulator. See my thread on it here.

It can be DIYed by removing the alternator from the car, then replacing the VR which is attached to the alternator by a few screws.

Your alternator will be either a Bosch or Valeo. My understanding is your new VR must match the alternator brand. They are not interchangeable.

As for the sensor itself, I don't think anyone on this forum has ever posted about the sensor actually failing for the W203.

Thanks for the info. That is what I was guessing/hoping as well. I found the OEM Valeo part on ebay for $38.00 so I will take a stab at that. I am doing the serpentine belt and tensioner now so it is the perfect time to tackle it!
