how long until I need to replace brakes after warning

The computer just warned me that I need to replace my pads. Just curious how many miles I can go -- Is this something I need to attend to right away or is there a couple 1000-2000 miles of buffer built into the warning?

Keep in mind that the sensor is only on one wheel. So the pessimist would say it's possible that the pads on the wheel without a sensor are more worn as they don't wear perfectly even wheel to wheel. The sensors trips with very little pad left and when most people would have replaced the pads a while ago. So you have to ask yourself, are you feeling lucky.
