H&R spring cut, old topic, new questions

I had H&R springs put into my car, and yes, like a lot of people, I had the sad realization that there still was a front wheel gap.

I just had new 18" put in yesterday, and guess what, that wheel gap got better due to the new tires.

I know there's A LOT of posts about cutting springs, OEM or aftermarket. But I'm a point where I'm frustrated in the money I've spent and not getting the look I'm after. So my last resort is to cut the front H&R springs by 1/2 a coil like some people have.

Seems like a lot of autoshops are scared to cut springs (*cough les schwab cough*). I have found couple places, that aren't car places, that will cut springs, but I need to tell them HOW and WHERE to cut it.

SO far, none of the posts actually goes into the detail of where to cut the 1/2 coil.

If you've had ur H&R front springs cut, please provide me with some more information on how it's done. Or PM me. I'm in the Seattle area.

Thanks a bunch.

I never cut springs on my c class but on my e class, i measured out a half coil and cut it with an air-powered dremel. Though I think a normal dremel with the heavy duty cut off wheels may have worked even better.

You dont need to take the strut apart. Just take the strut off the car and compress the spring, there should be enough room to cut it.

okay...when u measure out half a coil....

are you taking 1/4 off the top and 1/4 off the bottom?

because the top and bottom of the coil sits a certain way, so ifyou just took a half a coil off the top...or off the bottom..the alignment is messed up....

Its interesting, according to most on this forum, my E class with H&R springs, stock shocks, and 1/2 coil cut off the front should ride horribly. However, the ride is BETTER than stock. Much LESS bouncy, before I would get car sick, and the car still retains the feel as if you're riding on a pillow.

On the E class you cut off the top of the spring. Im pretty sure every car is like this. You may want to wait until someone with specific expierience chimes in though. You want to make sure that after you do the cut the spring will still mount onto the strut correctly.

1 coil goes all the way around....cut half a circle off the top.

yes, the observation that i've made while installing the springs myself was that, at the bottom, the spring sits a certain way (there a groove for the beginning of the bottom of the spring), as there is also a groove for the spring at the top (cap). I believe these grooves only align in one way (correct me if I'm wrong)

....so if i cut all at the top...this alignment will not match the new spring cut, as it's half coil removed (the groove will need to rotate 90 degrees).

so please correct me....and tell me that cutting half coil off the top doesn't matter, and the spring will still sit correctly in the seats....i'll be happy.. and getting da ish cut this weekend....

THANKS.

man rims are looking saucy man!!! hahah

by the way man, i got my front springs cut 1/2 coil in the pics i posted before and trust me its not bad at all like what people say. BEWARE though you have to cut the springs at what they call the dead coils. im not sure exactly if theyre the bottom or the fronts but thats where you should cut them... anyway...

LOVE THE RIMS MAN! good job on it!! I probably do the same on my wheels later on!

rims could use a lil more shininess aka clear coat

and the other issue we talked about...let's keep that a secret

so half a coil off the top it is....unless anyone has an issue with that....
