Down-firing LED's in rearview mirror, like VW/AUDI?

Has anyone seen the red LED's in the bottom of the rearview mirrors in the Passat or A4 (I assume other VW models have them too)? They illuminate the center dash console buttons with a soft glow of red. Anyone seen this done in a W203? I guess the trick would be to position the LED in such a way in the bottom of the mirror housing as to illuminate the center dash, but not be reflected in the front windshield. It seems, as I recall, that the W203's rearview mirror is positioned further away from the front windshield than the VW/AUDI. Maybe I should put the LED in the black plastic housing that covers the sensors in front of the mirror? Suggestions/ideas?

thanks
Jim

My '00 E has this factory installed setup. The light is located under the rear view mirror. Try to see if the mirror position is similar to your C.

Please post PIX, instructions, diagrams, anagrams whatever! I have wanted this feature for years now! Ever since I saw it on a 5 series Bimmer.

BTW: Bimmer uses an amber LED - so that it matches the gauges better.

Thanks!

Hmm? I wonder if the later models had it too?

I'm sure the later models do have it since the 00-02 E models are identical. The pre-00 models have an older exterior front/rear end but I doubt the insides changed much either.

Well Jim, the setup that I have in my car may give the effect you are looking for. I had a friend of mine mod out my interior dome light up front to emit a soft blue light. Not by way of those cheap colored bulbs, but by the use of clear blue LEDs. Every time I unlock my car at night, it glows blue inside my car; very cool look'n. :p

Sorry Skids... we're all looking for 'full time', orange, dim, directed/flood type led. This application is used in airplanes, ships, many many places. It basically washes the control surfaces with a dim yet dark-friendly light color so that one can see the buttons.

DSMIT, do you know if ...

DSMIT, do you know if the rearview mirror of the '02 C240 (I have C2 package if it makes a difference) is interchangeable with that of the '02 E320?

thanks!
Jim
