03 C230 kompressor; can oil filter be replaced without draining oil

so I'm 600 miles over my interval and felt it necessary to complete an oil change asap. After the oil is drained and the filter removed I notice the new filter is the wrong one. Put new oil and my old filter in, and place an order the correct oil filter. Can I replace the oil filter without draining the oil? Following a write up on another forum, it seems like I can as long as the oil housing is loosened and has adequate time for the oil to drain. Just want to be sure.

Never tried that before, but almost had the same situation due to the wrong filter wrench. Lucky for me, my local benz guy had a real one to sell me, and I rode my bicycle there.

Just try it and see....if it starts leaking, put it back in, drain the oil, and then put it back.
Get yourself one of these, it'll make the job easy.

thanks guys, I may have to look into the drill pump. Would come in handy for differentials and trannies as well as my other car with a belly pan/under car cover. Rock on, and I'll let everyone know if any problems are encountered.

The thing I like about it, is that you can drain right into the recycle containers provided by the garbage company.
No transfering oil from one container to another. That is if you're throwing the oil away.
Yeh, need to do my diff soon.

Drives: I downgraded to a VW, it's still German though
I think M111 oil filter is on the pass side under or near the dipstick tube? On M271 it's near the firewall on the drivers side.

Yeh, pull the cover next the dipstick.
Just yank on it, it takes a little force, but don't worry you won't break anything.
Search and you should find instructions here.

hello:

so do you have to drain the oil or you just let it sit there and remove the oil filter without problems?? I bought an oil filter wrench at the local auto shop and they didnt have the metal one..I got the plastic one but it broke..so now I didnt have a choice but to put the oil without changing the oil filter but will be doing it as soon as I get the correct wrench...thanks

Drain, replace filter, put the oil you drained back since it's still like new.
