I'm changing my oil as I type this and I cannot find the oil filter location on the M111 engine....any help???? PLEASE!

There are two plastic covers on top of the engine, on the right side. They look like real engine parts, until you know to lift them up. Your oil dipstick passes through a hole on the forward cover. Lift up that cover, and you'll see the oil filter just forward of the oil dipstick. The oil filter is inside a black plastic housing, so don't look for a metal oil filter like you might be used to. The fleece filter inside snaps out, though you may have to pull harder than you would think you need. The replacement filter snaps back in; the correct end of the filter to snap in should have a 1/4" deep divot, not a long hole into the center of the filter.

Ok so I got the square black cover off no prob. but how hard should you have to turn the black cap to the filter? I only had time to try for about 15mins, but the cap was seriously tight! Also my engine was burning hot. I was using towels to sheild the heat lol I guess I'll have to drive it home and wait till it cools, I'm just so anxious to get this done..

You need a tool to remove it, and a torque wrench to install it again. You want the correct tightness, or you will leave a serious puddle of very expensive lubricant on the floor.

Like Moviela said, you definitely need a cap-wrench, you can find it at Autozone and they call it "size B" cap-wrench. you would also need a torque wrenche to turn it.

Thanks for this info guys. I found it very useful. Just a quick question...how important is it to properly tighten the oil cap with a Torque wrench?? Can't I just tighten it pretty good (making sure NOT to over tightened?)

Also, what is the recommended torque for this filter cap?

I would say as tight as you would do with spak plugs. you don't wanna brake it. It just need to be tight but don't use full strength.

Thats what I was thinking. I don't think a torque wrench is completely necessary.

If you don't use it, it might be loose. unless you have a glove with good grip and then you might wanna go almost full strength.

edit: you might also wanna check for spills after the hand tightening.

I find that it tends to seat, as in it goes in just so far.
You'll feel it. You can't turn it too far.

I haven't used a torque wrench in the past, though
I recently invested in a good one, as for certain I have not been
torqueing things properly, so going forward I can do things right.

The service DVD lists almost every torque spec you could ever need.

No need to change it while it's burning hot...
wait till it cools a little.

If you drain from the bottom, be sure to stock up on the copper washers, or you will have a little drip.

I didn't have very good luck with the crappy filter tools from the auto parts store.
The 1st one self destructed, and the plastic cap got jammed into the
thing...took some doing to get it out without damaging anything.

2nd one, all plastic just slipped.

Finally bought one from my local mercedes guy for $20 bucks made of aluminum.

You use the screws just to break it loose, then remove them.

They also have the tranny dipstick for like 25 bucks, which is way inexpensive.

I plan on draining my oil out of the pan like I always have with my cars. You say I should replace a copper washer? Where do I get these?

Well, MB parts dept I suppose. I'd send you to the EPC, but someone else in Canada said they couldn't register.

I used to drain from the bottom, but it's ok to use a pump, it's in the service DVD. So I do...so much easier. Right from the sump to the recycle container they pick up at the curb, well at least around here.
