04/01-2 GROUP 42 - MODELS 170, 203, 202 WITH M111 ENGINE, ABS INDICATOR
LAMP ON AND FAULT CODE C1000-008 STORED: In isolated cases, the ABS
indicator lamp may light up and ESP/BAS/ABS fault messages appear in the
multi-function display. While driving or
just after the vehicle has been started, in such cases the fault code
C1000-008 is stored in the ESP control module. This fault is generated by
a brief, internal interruption in communications in the ESP control module.
Once the engine has been restarted, the fault message is no longer
displayed and the ESP system is reactivated. The fault remains stored in
the fault memory. No countermeasure is available at the present time.

Replacing the control module will not resolve the problem. Should this
fault occur, delete the fault code without performing any further repair
action be sure to note this on the repair order.

We will notify you as soon as a countermeasure is available.

*** REPLACES MB-NET NO. 017 DATED JANUARY 19, 2001 ***

As follow-up to MB-Net Message No. 015 dated January 18, 2001, please find
enclosed necessary warranty information and work instructions to repair the
Heated Washer Hose on S and CL class vehicles.

Damage code: 86900 40
Operation Code: 86-0000 inspect only (Time = 0.1 hr)
Model Indicator: 01
Operation Code: 02-3407 inspect and replace
(Time = 0.8 hr)
Model Indicator: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, N1, N2, N3
Part number: 220 860 08 92

The FAULTY heated washer hose, which is located next to the washer
reservoir, behind the right side head lamp, is identified via both the part
number, which is 220 860 08 92, AND a SINGLE PVC covering tube at the
electrical connector, which covers BOTH WIRES.

If a faulty heated washer hose is found, remove and replace the hose
assembly with the correct part number 220 860 08 92 (with TWO SEPARATE wire
covering tubes per wire)

Vehicles with part number 220 860 05 92 are good and do not need
replacement.

Additional parts for vehicles in retailer inventory will be drop shipped to
retailers during the week of the 22nd.

The forthcoming Recall Campaign Bulletin and Client Notification Letter
will be distributed during the week of January 29, 2001.

07/01-2 GROUP 80 - MODEL 203, SMARTKEY INTERMITTENTLY INOPERATIVE: In
cases where the remote SmartKey is intermittently unable to operate the
Central Locking System, or intermittently unable to be turned in the
Electronic Ignition Switch (N73), do not replace any components at this
time.

An updated SmartKey is expected to become available during late February to
address this issue. There is no fault with the Central Locking System or
the Electronic Ignition
Switch (EIS).

As a possible short-term solution to this issue, the SmartKey may be reset
as follows: Insert and remove the SmartKey from the EIS rapidly ten or
more times.

Further information will be released once a supply of SmartKeys becomes
available at the PDC.

02M/01-1 RECALLS AND SERVICE CAMPAIGNS: WHEN REPAIRING ANY VEHICLE,
ALWAYS CHECK THE VEHICLE MASTER INQUIRY FOR OPEN CAMPAIGNS

02M/01-2 GROUP 80 - MODEL 163, EXCESSIVE KEYCHAIN WEIGHT: Clients with
large, heavy key chains attached to the remote key may experience
inadvertent switching off of the ignition.

In some cases, such as on rough roads, the weight of objects on the
keychain may overcome the key folding detent force, causing the key to
begin to fold closed. The partially closed key may then act as a lever,
which can in some cases have sufficient torque to partially turn the
ignition switch towards the off position.

In case of client complaints, please ensure that only lightweight objects
are attached to the remote key. A new remote key, with a higher folding
force, was introduced into production as of December 18, 2000, VIN #245145.
Only keys with the higher folding force are supplied by Spare Parts. These
keys may be ordered as replacements to help in circumstances where key
chain weight may be problematic, although clients should be advised that
sufficient folding forces may still be generated where key chain weight is
excessive.
