Yes - a bit of a pain for DIY but Jeff can put the car on stands or a hoist (level) & top up with a large syringe.

5 speed auto? You have the dipstick?
Instructions with pics around here somewhere, but you will see a mark for 80C.
Run the engine till 80C on the dash temp readout, and
then check it with the engine running.
Should be at that 80C mark.
Better if you have Carsoft or access to DAS to be sure of temp.
But dash temp is pretty close.
Overfill or underfill will effect how the shifts feel.

Love this thread i'm going to be doing a fluid change shortly and send my oil to blackstone labs and see what the report says, I'm iffy on doing the full flush.

extreme mercedes couponing!
I'll probably do a rewrite at that time.

Well, I just did Tranny Flush # 2 @176K miles with genunine mercedes ATF134 courtesy, of
Mercedes! Yes, I got the filter, gasket, washer for the drain plug,
12 quarts of fluid all free!
+ I did the connector thingy, with the new orings.
I forgot what a Beetch it is to do though.
I think almost the worst part is pouring in the fluid!
That little fill hole you have to go slooooowwww.
Each liter, it seems like forever.....like the heinz ketchup commercials...

Arrgh, it's hard to stand like that hold the funnel, it doesn't sit in the hole you have to hold it, and
be careful not to spill, while, slowly pouring in the bottles.

I did just like I wrote, marked off some bottles with marks at 1, 2, and 3 liters, using new fluid.
Used that as a template and marked one other bottle.
One to drain and one to fill.
If I drained a little more or less below the mark then I just pour clean fluid in the clean fluid
bottle, and match it to what came out.
Then pout the dirty fluid into another bottle, since I only marked 2.

In the end, I think I f'd up.
I have 3.5 gallons of dirty fluid, and only used 11.1 liters of new fluid.
Hm....14 quarts = 12.3 L so I must have missed one liter.

I had 2 mishaps.
1. My T30 torx bit snapped off in the pan bolt!
Arrrgh! I tried to grap the bolt with pliers, but no luck.
1st time I did it, I didn't use a torque wrench.
You're only supposed to tighten the pan bolts to 8 Nm.
Which aint much. I did it right this time.
The drain plug is 20 nm.
So damn, it snapped off in the bolt.
Luckily, I Was able to grab the broken bit and pull it out!

Sheet, now what? I got the car all torn apart, fluid drained out the pan.
I scoured my tool kit, and viola, I found a 3/8 Craftsman T30, Whew!
#2. I can't find my dipstick!
It's not in the usual location.
I'm guessing I drained 2 quarts, and only put one in on
one of my cyles of flushing.
I'll just put the 12th liter in and that will pretty much what came out the car.

I was at it for 4.5 hours and the car is still on jack stands.
Need....food......grog....

Also, I didn't have the clamp for the hose that I use to drain from the tranny oil coolant hose off the radiator, but I gently put a pair of vice grips to keep the hose on.

I'm supposed to be on the road tomorrow,
I wanted to drain the diff, while i have it up in the air,
and i need to swap a coil pack on #1, got a misfire the other day.
AND my MAF is spewing oil everywhere.
I found my oil catch, took it off for smog,
need to put it back, but can't find the clamps.

Guess I'lll have some dinner and get up early to finish.

Now to put on the new front brakes,
and replace the head gasket and I"ll be ready for 300K miles!

All done! Car runs great.
It's possible my level isn't perfect but there's
12 liters of fluid in there.

Cleaned and resealed the MAF,
replaced coil pack #1,
washed her, and Lexol'd the seats.
Sweet!
I'm off to hit the coast!

Well, it isn't to say there's 12 quarts in the tranny, but I took 14 out and put 13 in.
It takes that much until the fluid comes out clean.
So, likely I'm a quart low, but the car ran prrrrfect all the way down and back.
Shifts as smooth as buttuh!
The capacity I do believe is something like 9.

And cleaning the MAF, sealing it, and putting in the new coil pack, ran better than ever!

John, why you posting a pic of the dipstick?

The capacity of the 722.6 transmission including torque converter & cooling circuit is 8 litres.
Anything above that is flushing fluid only.

So, the dipstick came today, bought one off ebay for $25.
Couldn't find mine anywhere.

I put it in cold, and it appeared overfull!
I was going oh geez, how could it be ovefull?
I took a quart more out than I put in!

Then I remembered you gotta check it when it's running and hot.
Sheeeet. Dry as a bone!
Twice it's down shifted and the tranny hickuped and went to N
while still in drive,
Couldn't source a bottle of ATF today.
Waiting for my shipment from Ryder but that might be a while!

Hey guys, I have been following this thread and just wanted to say thanks for the great info. I just did the simple flush a week ago following the instructions from this thread on my 2002 C240 (dropped the pan, changed the filter and replaced 4 quarts of tranny fluid) because of this whining sound from 30mph ~ 50mph. After the flush the noise was still there. So on Saturday I took it to a local Indy mechanic and he told me the same crap, "don't do a full tranny flush, the sludge is good for the transmission shifts, any time we do a flush we DONOT flush the torque converter, leave it alone". So my question to you guys is can I do a full transmission flush now without removing the pan, the pan seal and filter? I was hoping by just draining the pan thru the plug and following the instructions on flushing the torque converter should suffice. Also, has anyone had that same problem with the 722.6 transmissions whine, and if so has the full transmission flush fixed it? Also, At 70mph driving on the freeway, my rpms are at 3000. Anyone that can help would be much appreciated. Thanks, panzafio

You sure it's in the tranny?' Not a pulley on the engine?
Ever drain and fill the diff?

I've heard the talk about all new fluid being bad, but how can mixing
crappy old oil with new be better? I just flushed mine, 2nd time @ 177K miles and it shifts like new! I could tell the fluid was getting worn out, it was clunking during shifts.
I can't imagine leaving 4-5 quarts of worn out ineffective fluid in the tranny.

I drained the differential this past Saturday. filled to the level of the fill plug with the MB gear oil. I guess what you are trying to say is drain the tranny fluid and torque converter and then see what happens. Its just an annoying sound. When I drive the car, If I pop the the tranny into neutral the sound is still there. I am still open to ideas anyone may have. Thanks!

Well I received my 12(!) count 'em TWELVE quarts of tranny fluid from ryder truck supply for a total of....ZERO dollars.
Well i say zero, because they had a pending charge but it fell off after 5 biz days, and now I don't see any charge?
Well, even if they get around to re-charging me,
I still paid less for the 2 quarts I opened, than if I'd bought 2 L at the dealer, at 20+ tax.
Wow, what a deal. Apparently this was going on for a while when I discovered it.
People on a Sprinter forum 1st saw it back at the begginning of Aug, and were in contact the webmaster, and all kinds of stuff.

Wow, how could I have been so off in my last flush?
Thankfully, Mercedes over engineering saved the day.
Maybe it was always low? Maybe last flush I measured wrong?
Well I know I was a quart off, because I put in 13 and had 14 in waste.
(that how much you need to do actually flush out the old crud)

I'm right at the top of the 80C mark, with it at full operating temp which typically is a little over 80C.
So, anyway, it downshifts even better than before.

panzafio, I really don't know what the problem but when I was looking at this whole Ryder truck fluid thing, someone in a Sprinter forum said something about pulling the whole (whachamacallit where the valving is)
to resolve a noise...
lemme see if I can find it.

Huh? All I can say, is I feel more power getting the ground, I'd swear my mileage went up, and shifting is smooooooth.
