This is a fresh report with 6k miles on 229.5 Mobil1 oil with a paper Hengst filter (M271 engine though).

Dear All,
please advise me what i should us engine oil for my C240 2003 base.
The last time i had the oil changed, i used total 10w40 semi synthetic and when i reached 5000 KM + i read on the screen that i need to add 1 liter to reach maximum oil level.

Use only one of the Approved Benz products & top up from time to time. Some oil usage is quite acceptable. If you have been using non approved products your oil consumption might improve over time as the ring belt is cleaned up.

Dear Glyn,
Thank you for your advise, just to be more specific, i've been advised by Mercedes benz official dealer in lebanon to use TITAN 10W40 ! do you agree? because on MOBIL website they advised me to use MOBIL 1 0W40 ! isn't this one less viscous than the 10W40 which may lead to more oil consumption in my engine (BTW my engine total mileage is 250,000 KM)

Benz does not approve any 10W~40. only the tested 0W~30, 0W~40, 5W~30 & 5W~40.

The engine sees a 0W when freezing cold -18 deg C & an SAE 40 at operating temperature. So hot a 10W~40 is the same viscosity as a 0W~40.

Engines don't necessarily use more of a "thin" oil than a "thick" one. It all depends on ring pump (a very complex issue) & ring pressure on the bore which requires nice clean ring lands & grooves. It also depends on condition of valve guide seals.

The C240 M112 engine frequently does 1 million Km's in Asian taxi service without being touched. It's a tough old unit. Run the correct oil. Let it settle down for 10,000 Km's. Don't worry about some oil consumption. Make absolutely sure you have no oil leaks. Small leaks run away with an amazing amount of oil.

Hi Glyn, I'm in Nelspruit and I've just recently bought a W203 C320 V6 with 151000 km's on the clock. We seem to think rather the same, I see. I was a VW Service Manager for 20-years before retirement and we had lots of turbo failures due to wrong oil useage. Those cars that used Castrol 10W60 fully synthetic "Racing oil" never broke turbos, like my daughters' 1.8T Passat as well, so I am going to use this oil in my C320 as well at the next service. However, what is a "Fleece" -oil filter? Where do I buy one? My service indicator reads "Next service in 14000-km's", but I don't trust it as there is no service book or record in the car. Midas have a Gud filter for R230-00. The oil readout reads (when I got the car) add 3-x 500 ml, which I did, Castrol 10W60, and it reads: "Correct" now. So as the Castrol is over R400.00 for 5-Litres only (10-bottles), I believe I need 14x500Ml for full oil change, with sump drain-bolt removal. I thought of just fitting a Gud oil filter now and 500-ml of 10W60 Castrol till the 165000-km oil change, for just in case the sevice-indicator is really correct? Will the Gud-filter be a paper one? Although I'm an "old" man at 66-yrs, I removed the rear muffler and had straight-pipes fitted with quad-tips for an acceptable "growly"-sound and it really is nice. Car is a V6 without supercharger, but it still goes like a rocket. Better than my 528 and my 728 BMW's ever did years ago. I love this 320 and my next car will be a C63 (if there is a next time), but I still feel sprightly. I prefer to do my own manual labour, but on electrical hassles if any occur, I'll go to the agents.

Just wanted to get your view on oil,I drive a w211 e55 113 engine awesome car by the way and my prev car was a w210 320 112 engine ,the queston is a 10w-60 full syn shell ultra bad for my engine in any way , I ran mobil 1 0w-40 for a while but I struggle to get hold of it in polokwane that's why the shel is now the choice

I was a VW Service Manager for 20-years before retirement and we had lots of turbo failures due to wrong oil useage. Those cars that used Castrol 10W60 fully synthetic "Racing oil" never broke turbos, like my daughters' 1.8T Passat as well, so I am going to use this oil in my C320 as well at the next service. However, what is a "Fleece" -oil filter? Where do I buy one? My service indicator reads "Next service in 14000-km's", but I don't trust it as there is no service book or record in the car. Midas have a Gud filter for R230-00. The oil readout reads (when I got the car) add 3-x 500 ml, which I did, Castrol 10W60, and it reads: "Correct" now. So as the Castrol is over R400.00 for 5-Litres only (10-bottles), I believe I need 14x500Ml for full oil change, with sump drain-bolt removal. I thought of just fitting a Gud oil filter now and 500-ml of 10W60 Castrol till the 165000-km oil change, for just in case the sevice-indicator is really correct? Will the Gud-filter be a paper one? Although I'm an "old" man at 66-yrs, I removed the rear muffler and had straight-pipes fitted with quad-tips for an acceptable "growly"-sound and it really is nice. Car is a V6 without supercharger, but it still goes like a rocket. Better than my 528 and my 728 BMW's ever did years ago. I love this 320 and my next car will be a C63 (if there is a next time), but I still feel sprightly. I prefer to do my own manual labour, but on electrical hassles if any occur, I'll go to the agents.

I have raced motorcycles, Dune-buggies etc and I believe that oil is what makes engines last or fail or die prematurely. Therefore, I believe that ie: a 0W40 is not really necessary for our country South Africa as the "0" is to cause less wear at super low and icy temperatures and the "40" is too low in my opinion, in a 30ºC-plus daytime running environment, especially if the car is driven "enthusiastically." In SA, 10W (as a low) is quite ample for cold start-ups and the "60" ensures maximum protection at hi-RPM and it will protect your engine to its fullest degree, especially if the engine has hit 100'000 km's or more and it will make-up for the wear factor already suffered normally, on hi-milers. Castrol to my knowledge, is the only local manufacturer/importer of this fully synthetic oil in my country and I believe that this is the ultimate protection for any car, but especially for a high-end car such as Mercedes, BMW and Audi. I'm not trashing the other makers of oil, but I'm a firm believer in matching your chosen oil to your country, morning temperatures, KM's already covered and your environment. If I lived in Alaska, I would use a synthetic 0W40 and that would be the correct oil there, especially in very sub-Zero winters. https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/driving.gif

There are literally hundreds of oils that work perfectly in a M112/113 which are not approved, and did not seek approval from Mercedes.

Mainly, HD diesel truck oils, 15w-40 and 10w-30. I'm planning on a run of Rotella 10w-30. There's absolutely no reason on Earth to believe it will work anything less than spectacularly.

Also, 10w-40 from a jug, High Miles preferred. MaxLife is an amazing product.

Basically, approval is a tax. Also EPA mpg tests require the same oil be recommended to the customer as is used in the test, so it becomes paramount in small percentages that do not matter to the average driver. Cold-cranking is another approval stipulation. Neither of these two properties of 0w-40 matter to a driver in Texas or Saudi Arabia etc. It may actually work poorly. Not long ago, the driver selected the grade of oil based on climate and driving...







Low wear, low operating costs, no sludge or deposits, that's all it takes for a lube to work. For us, a heavy 30 through a heavy 40 is all you need. Even the two mixed is effective if climate needs it.

Also, people don't realize there are two setting to the oil life monitor, for 229.5 and for "standard" oil...




These engines do not stress the oil like some do. I would suggest over 10k miles, that TWO 5k changes of regular dino oil does a better job than ONE change of
synth oil....for the same cost. There's no substitute for physically draining out contaminates and putting in fresh friction modifier additives with an oil change.
