Is Mobil 1 truly synthetic?

I found the below explination on another website. If this is true should I use something else?

Just a friendly reminder: M1 is NO longer a TRUE - FULLY synthetic.

That doesn't make M1 inferior, just not the superior anymore. All, thanks to Castrol!

Correct, Mobil 1 used to be made primarily with a group IV base stock which is mandatory for any product to be called synthetic in any country except the US. In the US Group III base stock which is made from purified Pertoleum is all that is required to be called a Sythetic, which is what most Castrol Syntec oil is made from (German Made Syntec is the exception as it is made from GIV stock).

Group III base stocks are very good oils. Castrol GTX from 20 years ago used to be made with Group III base stock and it was the best performing "regular" oil available, but that changed when Syntec was introduced (same product and GTX used to be but different bottle)

Some True Group IV Sythetic oils are Redline (GIV and GV), Royal Purple, Amsoil, German Syntec and others

It meets MB's requirements. That's what matters in my book.

I'm with the German's on not stretching the "Synthetic" nomenclature to include GpII/GpIII even though the ISO dewaxing technology & heavy hydrotreating is my old company's technology in the main. It still produces fabulous base oil.

All that counts is the Benz 229.5 approval.

Mobil 1 Euro formulation 0W-40 as approved by Benz is a PAO (Poly-Alpha-Olefin) based product & thus a true GpIV synthetic product.

I can't talk for the other Mobil 1s sold in America. They fail HTHS so likely not PAO.

What would you suggest I use considering Mobil 1 in America is not PAO?

See Karo's comment.
Use Mobil 1 0W-40 & make sure it has 229.5 on the bottle. The Benz Euro formulation is readily available in the US. Mobil also sell other Mobil 1s in that market in other viscosity grades so just make sure you buy the correct one.

I'm pretty sure Mobil1 0w-40 that we get in the US is PAO.

I believe this controversy stemms from Mobil sueing Castrol over the definition of what a "synthetic" oil is. Basically Castrol is the one that classified some of thier Group III oils as full synthetic.

I've done HOURS of research on what the best oil is and agree with everyone here that Mobil1 0w-40 is best. It's not only the factory fill for all MB's including AMG, it's 229.5 compliant, meets ACEA A3 (B3/B4) specs and is the factory fill/suggested oil for an impressive list of other cars.

Use M1 0w-40, end of discussion.

That's how much I get it for.
Here is a good site to get oil filters.
http://www.germanfilters.com/

MANN makes the filters for Mercedes. OEM filters, just doesn't have MB logo on the box.
