BAS/ESP Error, Brake pedal stiff and idle issues

Hey guys,

Long time reader but very few posts. I have an 02 c230 coupe. I was driving on the freeway when I saw a bunch of traffic coming up and went to hit the brakes. The pedal was extremely stiff and I almost wasn't able to stop in time. Upon stopping in traffic the cars idle was dropping almost to the point where it would stall out, then the RPM's would rev up to about 1500, and then drop again, over and over. I pulled the car over to shut it off and restarted it but the problem continued. I got it home so it's sitting in the garage but I am kind of stumped. I am going to go buy a gauge so I can read error codes but I do not have any yet. Any input is appreciated as the car is not really in a drivable state. Thanks!

Ok so I picked up a scanner and pulled codes. I have a cylinder number 3 misfire. I tried swapping coil packs, I assumed I was swapping two and three but now it says number one is mis firing. I can't seem to find anything on how the cylinder order. I assumed that number one was closest to the front of the engine bay. Is this how it is?
