Intermittent electronics shutdown while driving

I seem to be having an odd issue with my EIS. When driving, occasionally the electronics in the car will shut down as though the key is in the first position. Can't roll down windows, no AUX, no A/C, COMAND goes dark. However, the engine, power steering and brakes still work fine and oddly, the radiator fan spins up very loud. Once I pull over and turn the car off (taking the key out and restarting) everything goes back to normal. I cleaned the battery terminals as per the advice of a mechanic I talked to, however the car still shuts down intermittently. I got code P1088 on a mercedes scanner which says "Fault in CAN communication with control unit N73 (EIS [EZS] control unit)". What is a DIY solution I could do myself? Any things to debug first? I've searched on the forums and no one seems to have an issue quite like what I'm experiencing (intermittent faults).
