01 C320 front end noise

Hi all,

I am having a problem with our 01 C320. Basically when the car is running over bumps the front end would produce some knocking sounds. After searching the forum I have found the possible causes of the problems:

-- The front struts or any of the bushings
-- The sway bar bushings and end links
-- Lower Ball joint or Control Arm upper ball joint.
-- Wheel bearing
-- The axle shaft

When driving normally on a smooth road the sound is mostly not there, but when the car is driven on rough road bumps the knocking sounds would get serious. I feel that there is something that is loosen. The power steering rack of the car was replaced not long ago.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Id bet it were the sway bar end links Easy 15 minute fix on each side - just tighten them down.

Thanks TruTaing. Is there a DIY page that I can refer to when I tighten the sway bar end links?

Thanks again!

just take the wheels off and it's pretty straight forward.

you might want to get the control arms bushings changed btw. they will make your car ride like new.

Thanks for your advice Frank. Since it is possible that the sway bar end links are loose on my car, will be any immediate danger if they get too loose and detach themselves?

I am a newbie in mechanical jobs, but I am learning to fix the problems on my car whenever possible. So please forgive me if I make any mistakes.

Thanks again!

Agree with Frank. Sway links & castor/control arm bushes which always crack & fail on these cars
