Water Pump removal on M112 (W203) 4Matic
Guys,
I am thinking of replacing the water pump (on my '04 C320 4Matic) because the water pump pulley doesn't spin freely - it spins with some rubbing noise... when I spin (with the belt removed), it sounds faint squeak as if some gasket is rubbing against it . Any of you replaced the water pump on a M112 engine? Does any other component (like the belt tensioner or harmonic balancer) needs to be removed to access any of the bolts on the water pump housing?
Johnand or Karo, would either of you be kind enough to post a WIS for water pump replacement for 112.953 (W203.084)? Thanks.

currently at 75,000 miles.
Coolant is NOT leaking from the water pump (not even a drop). When I spin the water pump pulley by hand, it feels like it's dragging something and it makes a faint squeaking noise. The noise sounds like when we spin two metallic parts separated by a rubber gasket.

Anyone have a instructional for the M271 1.8L engine? I'm receiving my pump today but need to know what steps to take to replace it with out any future issues (incase i miss something i dont know). Mine is doing the same as PCY trouble shooting with the belt off (a rubbing type noise when spinning it).
Thanks!
Thanks!

Thanks Karo for posting those pdfs. Unfortunately, I am not able to open the pdfs for M272 and m112. Would you please report? Thanks.

Thanks Karo. Much appreciated brotha.
Any of you guys wouldn't happen to have a coolant flushing and refill instructions or DIY to go along with doing the water pump replacement?

I did a water pump on a M112 3.2L in a 1999 ML350.
It's a bear. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
I needed special tools to remove the fan pulley, which you shouldn't need
likely electric fan.
Other than that, you have to remove the alternator, and about 100 bolts to get the thing out.
On the advise of a local mechanic, I used a piece of cardboard, traced the gasket, and outline of the new pump, and placed all the bolts in the appropriate locations in the cardboard, poked 'em through, mirroring the locations on the pump since they are all different lengths.
Worked like a charm.
I was exhausted when I was done.
I contemplated my existence, if I was a professional mechanic and this was just one of maybe 5 jobs
I'd have to do in a day.
My guy wanted 350 in labor to do the work, which starting out sounded like
alot, but not after I was done.
There's a DIY on the W210 forum I think.

Here is the picture of the waterpump with all the bolts
- 10 bolts of size 10,
- 4 bolts of size 12,
- one large bolt for the alternator,
- one long bolt for the idler pulley,
- 4 bolts that hold the water pump pulley,
- two screws for the two coolant hoses
Unlike on my ML (W163) on a W203 (M112), there is no viscous fan to remove.

Knock yerself out! Ha ha !!!!
It's still a 4 hour job at least.
If you're gonna do it, might as well get the alt rebuilt.

I agree with you 100% on this. On M112 engine, removal of alternator is very easy once the waterpump is removed. Without removing the waterpump, removing the alternator is a tricky job.
Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to search for alternator rebuild places in my area.

Just put new brushes in, should keep it going to 180K at least.
But honestly, if it's not leaking, leave it alone.

Bumping an old thread instead of creating a new one...
I've noticed my car has been making a knock-like sound from the engine bay and it seems to be coming from the water pump/water pump pulley. The water pump pulley is wobbling which I don't think is normal. What are the odds that just the pulley needs replacing or is the wobble caused by the water pump itself? I tried checking the four bolts on the face of the pulley and snugged them up a bit, but none of them were loose enough to cause this much wobble. Any suggestions?

take the belt off and try and pull up and down on the wp pulley there should be little to no plY
Mine had TONS of play 03 c240 wagon at about 125,000 KM
was easy to do took about 2 hours
i used the new pump and every bolt i removed from the old i inserted into the new then once the old was off i trasfered them to the old this way i did not mix up the different bolts!

its the bearings on the pump itself
if you have ever done a wp on any car you can do this one it was very easy
I did mine whe I hadn the rad was out so i had more room then normal
but if you pull the rad fan out you will be ok
just make sure everything is CLEAN when putting new pump on!

In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can get the WIS documents from Karo or anyone else that may have them.
