How to replace steering angle sensor?
That's right. Finally saved enough to buy a 3rd party angle sensor but I've looked around and didn't find a DIY. Can someone guide me?

I got it from autohausaz.com. Part#: W0133-1897907 - $194 shipped. Stealership wanted $450. Labor might still kill me thats why I'm hoping someone here can guide me step-by-step.

What's a clock spring, and can it be DIY repaired? If not, where can I buy one from? I'm only asking because the pdf states the clock spring needs to be taken out as well. When I turn my steering wheel lock to lock (or in a fast motion), I hear some clunk coming from inside the steering. Sounds plastic-y. Broken clock-spring may be?

I got the new sensor but it doesn't appear to fit. The part I received is "0025421918" and it's what all the sites say is the steering sensor. The part number on my old sensor is "0025428618", and I can't find it anywhere. What am I doing wrong?

I took my steering wheel off this weekend in hopes to set the Steering Angle Sensor to it's basic config. Didn't seem to help though, still getting ESP errors.
Here's my SAS:
As you spin the black plastic ring in the green circles, the gear in red circle spins. To set the 'basic position' you spin the black ring till a green tooth of the gear shows through the little window I circled in red.
My SAS P/N: is A 002 542 86 18
This pic is the back of the SAS (opened up) you can see the gear that spins in red, the copper disk that spins under the LED's highlighted in the black box.
I don't have any pics of it, but the clock spring is the part that snaps into this one and then into the steering wheel. It has the green & yellow wires that go to the airbag and the 3-pin connector for steering wheel controls hanging off it.
The STAR Service DVD from MB (P-2700-203-07) says if you remove it, to set the basic position you spin it counter clockwise (I think, need to check!) till it feels a little snug, then turn it clockwise 3-3.5 times.
newhandle, can you put up some pics of what you received?

Thanks for the update ambit. Really appreciate it. Now, do you happen to know where to get a replacement SAS unit from? I know I mentioned earlier that I got mine online, but after my mechanic inspected the part, he said it won't fit. My original SAS unit has the same pin as yours, but the ones being sold online are different. The part# that every website has for our cars is "002 542 19 18", which is different to the original pin of "002 542 86 18". I'm confused as we speak.
P.S: My mechanic ran SDS and found the code "C1172", which points to the SAS, and that's how I know I need a replacement. My cruise control doesn't work either (which Im assuming passes through the SAS)

Apparently this part was phased out and replaced with the one above. Search the original pin on the site and you'll get to the link above. But it's $285 for god's sake... yikes!!!

I replaced my SAS with a used ebay part and it worked just fine. I didn't had to reset the codes or anything. I didn't even calibrate the clock-spring. I got ESP unavailable error for the first few minutes of driving but then it cleared itself.
Paid $100 for the part and DIY... saved myself $500.
Procedure:
1. Wear an industrial grade head protection because you're too lazy to disconnect the battery in order to deactivate the airbag.
2. Remove the airbag by loosening the 2 side-screws via a T30 driver or ratchet.
3. Carefully pull off the airbag. My gf has 2 so it's much harder. Mind the 3 wires going into it though.
4. The black wire pulls straight out, the yellow and green are clipped.
5. The hard part now is getting the 10mm bolt off the column. You will need a rachet with at least a 2' extension bar. Either have someone hold the steering for you, or use your weaker arm. The point is that your ratchet force must not act on the steering lock.
6. Pull off the steering and play some frisbee with it.
7. Take out the 3 torx screws from the clock spring.
8. Gently pry out the clock spring in a circular patten. It's stuck onto the SAS. It should pull straight out. Be careful not to break anything.
9. Pull off the SAS and admire the quality of Benz parts.
10. Follow the calibration procedure in the above posts.
11. Stick the clock spring on the SAS (it's easier this way) and put everything back together.
12. Start up the car in anticipation.
13. If you get codes, try resetting the SAS by turning the steering lock to lock. Drive around and stop. Check again.

I also replaced my Steering Angle Sensor (A 002 542 86 18) with a used part from ebay. Mine was actually from a 2003 CLK.
After clearing the codes with CarSoft my "ESP Error visit workshop" message is finally gone. My cruise control is also working again now too.

Supposedly I need a new box thats under the
rear cargo area or rear seat.
Not sure which.
Were you able to reset the SRS error from disconnecting the airbag with Carsoft?
I get errors but doesn't seem to effect anything, ESP still kicks in,
cruise control works etc.
I would love to have the constant ESP error on the dash go away.
What does 1172 indicate?
I know my steering angle sensor is working I can see the angle in
Carsoft.
Is there a calibration procedure?

C1172 refers to steering angle sensor. As far as I know, the wiring for the cruise control and airbag go through it, which is why my cruise control also didn't work. Did you try resetting the sensor? If not, start the car on a level surface and turn your steering lock-to-lock 5 times and center. This will reset the SAS. Are you sure your SAS is working?
FYI, ESP is tied down to so many things it's not easy to diagnose.

Thankyou
I would just like to say a huge thankyou to all that contribute to this forum especially this thread. My C coupe 93, has had the " esp not available " displayed since i bought it 18 months ago. Passed last years MOT but this year they decided to fail it. Having read all the various threads i thought about the steering angle sensor having found in previous invoices that the instrument stork had been replaced. I removed everything recalibrated the clock spring wiring ,refitted everything to all the fantastic instructions on here. 100 metres up the road problem solved. No need to put on a diagnostic awesome 👍 thankyou
