Yes you can use another unit but need a Star to achieve recognition. I'm trying to save you buying an expensive TCU for no gain. Problem could still be in the transmission & mechanical.

Finally Resolved!!

Well after 3 months I finally found a shop that was 1. Honest 2. Stuck with it to find the problem!

After multiple shops (3) who all basically wanted to experiment/guess with my money I found a guy who was actually recommended to me by a neighbor who also has a benz. This guy litterly went through everything in the car (tranny related) to find the problem.

It did end up after all that to be the Conductor Plate.

Funny thing...it was already "replaced" by another shop who then went on to want to do a tranny rebuild! Come to find out that it was the original part and had NEVER been replaced.

I can say that I found the Indy shop that will continue to do the work on this C240. Although I was pretty confident in him when I first pulled up and found out that he had a $250,000 Ferrari in for repair that the dealership charged $6000 to repair and didnt fix the problem. If someone trust a car that cost as much, if not more then some peoples houses then I could trust him with my car.

If anyone is interested in a Very Good Indy located in South Orange County, Ca that was VERY resonable for the amount of time he spent on my car, send me a message and I will send you his info. Dont want anyone to think im trying to SPAM the forum.

Also, Thanks everyone for their suggestions and help.... No I am going to go

Thanks for coming back. Pleased it's fixed. So it was the damn conductor plate - common, but we all discarded it because they told you it was new.

In need of shop contact info.

I have exactly the same symptoms on my 2001 c240.
New to this forum. Could you please post or send me the contact info for the shop that fixes your problem?

after the conductor plate was changed do you know if they have to relearn the trans shift points.

On the 5 speed transmission the change points are remembered in the TCU. On the 7 speed the TCU is part of the conductor plate & all values have to be cross flashed.

If you are having trouble after CP replacement on a 5 speed then all adaptions should be reset with a Star.

On Saturday, I started my car and put it in reverse and the transmission made a sudden jerk. As I put the car from Neutral to drive it also made the same jerk. Which is very unusual. Then as I was driving off the car wouldn't shift into 2nd gear and then I noticed on the instrument cluster then car showed it was still in Park. So then I turned the car off and restarted everything was fine.

Today, I was stopped at a red light and hit the gas pedal to accelerate. In doing so it seemed as if the car had the emergency brake on while accelerating (maybe slipping). When I got to work I couldn't put the gear shifter into Park so I had to turn the car off to do so.

Could someone please give me some things to check. I need to hook the car up to the OBD 2 reader to see if there are any fault codes.

The only simple check would be the fluid level------and you are only going to get and OBD transmission 07XX fault if the CEL is on---if not then you are in the "stump the chumps" mode!!

I don't think the transmission level is low because I changed the tranny fluid last year and only have about 15k mi on the new fluid. There is no Check engine light on currently and transmission still shifts smooth.

What is "stump the chumps" mode? lol

I was able to hook a code reader up to the computer and it displayed the 2 codes:
CAN signal for the Electronic selector level position is implausible
ETC control unit (EGS)

P2067
P240C

I know one person on here at issues with the gear shifter and when he unplugged it and plugged it back in it started working again and I haven't heard of any more issues from him on here.

would a defective gear selector sensor cause the car to go into limp mode? sometimes the car starts off in 3rd gear. If that happens, I just turn the car off and restart and car shifts fine. I brought it to a local mechanic and he said its the conductor plate eventhough the codes are showing (P2067 & P240C)

I can't provide you with a quick out of the box answer---when I use my DAS Xentry and I quick test a car and get the faults ,if any, I can double click the fault and run an appropriate test to determine the validity of the fault and or if possibly some thing sympathetic is causing the fault---with my result I tell the customer with a very high degree of probability that his XXX sensor is faulty.

In your case IHGTFFI what sensor is really faulty, because the so called scan is not really complete---it just says what it says!!---therefore if you trust the gent follow his lead!!

I replaced the shifter module. Unfortunately, this part is only available at the dealer. Hopefully that helps!
