Regarding a DIY chain/tensioner replacement on the M271 I4. I do not have it & there are a couple of special tools that make the job a lot easier to feed the new chain & hold the camshafts in the correct position so that you get the valve timing correct to the crankshaft.
Maybe someone could post the method from the maintenance CD or Star.

JC - you are a star! Can't you post it as a pdf?
Johnand. You guys with the maintenance CD's & WIS that post pdf's. Do you need full Acrobat to do that?

Glyn , I would be very interested to learn how to.
I have wis on an old machine as it will not run on my latest 64 bit computer.
I have downloaded PDF Creator but still have problems . When printing from Wis no option is shown for PDF.
Currently I just print & scan the copy!!
I will come to grips with it one day !!.

No need to apologise. You have been a great help. We will find out how the guys post pdf's from WIS. I'm sure it's simple. I have full Acrobat so conversions are easy from almost anything. Full Adobe Suite is expensive these days. I'm no IT nerd I'm afraid.

I replaced my chain/intake valves almost 3 years ago on my 2003 C230. Pics in the gallery: https://mbworld.org/forums/members/a...-teardown.html
Cost me ~$2000 to do myself, and I'm very mechanically inclined.
Good luck, I just got rid of my other M271 and won't own another.

I will convert to pdf for everyone tonight. If you need IT assistance, just ask... It's my profession, and will do my part to help this forum and MB community.

Well the M111 shared the leaky gasket issue with the W104 I think it is,
it's 6 cylinder cousin, both coolant leak on the rear cylinder.
Too bad it such a pain in the **** to replace.

It cost $2000 to replace just the chain? Or $2000 to do it yourself once it had jumped time and damaged valves?
Glyn is right about my car. Have 123,200 miles today and chain is silent.

I am sick to my stomach, I believe my timing chain has also jumped time. I have a 103K miles and have serviced my car on schedule and am a fair driver. I am dissappointed that a $37K car did not hold up longer than 103K miles. I was expecteding at least 200K out this car before I experienced any major problems. Shoot I have a '94 Maxima that has 230K miles on it and still runs like a champ. I guess I will look for a new engine and spend the 3-5K to fix rather than purchase a new car and get a car payment.
Are there any Mercedes repair manuals I could purchase, I am thinking of doing the complete engine swap my self. Just looking at it, it does not look like it would be too difficult.

I have a 2005 C230, this past saturday I turned the car off and went for a visit of a friend, I came out to start the car and heard a loud pop and then it felt like the car was out of time. What makes me think it is the timing chain is earlier in this thread it was mentioned the noise made at cold start up. I did notice a noise at start up for about three months now, so making assumtions that if the noise was attribuited to the timing chain then it seems logical that the stress of start up caused the timing chain to jump.
If there are any suggestions of how to detemrine it is the timing chain I am all ears.

I'm doing this soon. No noise from my car, so I am hopefully not living on borrowed time - no pun intended.
How many miles you have on your 05, Dune?

The silence from your car is a good sign but don't leave it forever. You want to pull through a new chain without having to replace anything other than the tensioner.
